Camocim Beach
Working port, golden sands, and real Ceará life

About
Praia de Camocim stretches roughly 4 kilometres along the edge of Camocim city in western Ceará, where the Rio Coreaú meets the Atlantic. The golden sand here carries the character of a working waterfront — fishing boats launch from the shore, and the river estuary tints the water brown, especially after rains. It's an urban beach in the truest sense: locals outnumber tourists, the pace is unhurried, and the historic lighthouse at the river mouth anchors the skyline. The port activity gives the place a raw, functional energy that polished resort beaches simply don't have.
How to get there
From Camocim city centre, the beach is a five-minute drive. Coming from Jijoca de Jericoacoara, allow around 90 minutes by car. Ferry access is also available. Free street parking runs along the beachfront — no app or ticket machine required.
Who it's for
For couples
The relaxed, unhurried pace and long stretch of golden sand make this a low-key escape for couples who prefer local atmosphere over resort polish — walk the promenade at dusk with the lighthouse lit up ahead.
For families
The flat, paved promenade and easy access make it manageable with kids, but keep children away from the port channel and boat launch areas — stick to the calmer mid-beach sections for paddling.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Praia de Camocim is not a beach you visit for swimming or watersports — the estuary currents are real, the port channel is active, and the brown water after rains is not inviting. Understand that upfront and you'll appreciate what this place actually is: a long, golden-sand urban waterfront where real Ceará life plays out in front of you. The lighthouse, the fishing boats, the unhurried promenade — it all adds up to something genuinely local. It works best as a base or a transit stop on the way to wilder spots like Tatajuba or Guriú. Avoid March through May when river runoff is at its worst. Come for the atmosphere, the food nearby, and the lighthouse at dusk — not for a swim.
What to do
The Camocim Lighthouse, just 0.5 km from the beach, is a historic landmark at the mouth of the Rio Coreaú and worth a close look. For day trips, Praia de Guriú sits 15 km away — a traditional jangada fishing village beach still largely intact. The remote Praia de Tatajuba, 30 km out, offers ghost village ruins and active dune fields for those willing to make the journey.
The Camocim Lighthouse framed against the Rio Coreaú estuary is the defining shot — catch it at sunset when the golden sand catches the last light.
The working fishing port, with colourful boats lined up along the shore, gives you an authentic slice of Northeast Brazilian coastal life that stands apart from any postcard.
Where to eat
Farol Point, just 0.4 km from the beach, is the closest option and well regarded by locals. A short drive brings you to Ponto 10 Restaurant and Villa del Mar Praia Hotel, both around 1.7 km away and consistently well reviewed. Restaurante El Mirador Camocim, 2.5 km out, rounds out the options with solid local scores.
Where to stay
Pousada Grand Fortim and Camocim Praia Hotel are both within 1.8 km of the beach and offer straightforward bases for exploring the area. Villa Del Mar Praia Hotel and Camozen Resort & Spa sit at the same distance if you want more comfort. Hotel Dunas is a further option at 3.5 km.
Photography
The lighthouse at the river mouth is the standout shot — frame it at golden hour from the beach for the best light against the estuary. Early morning is ideal for capturing fishing boats launching from the shore before the day's activity picks up.
Good to know
Swim well away from the port channel: active boat traffic makes that stretch genuinely dangerous. Respect the areas where fishing boats launch — don't set up towels or wade in those zones. Estuary currents can be strong, particularly near the river mouth, so stay in calmer sections of the beach. After heavy rain, river runoff makes the water noticeably murkier — this is worst from November through April.
