Paulino Neves BeachBrazil Beach Guide
Golden sands, trade winds, and wide Atlantic skies

About
Praia de Paulino Neves stretches wide and flat along the Atlantic edge of Maranhão's eastern buffer zone, where the dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses begin to give way to open coast. Golden sand runs to the waterline, and the blue Atlantic rolls in with consistent force — this is not a calm cove. Trade winds sweep the beach with reliable energy, making the air feel alive even on the quietest days. A small town backs the beach, keeping things low-key and unhurried. It's a transit point as much as a destination, sitting on the kitesurf corridor that links Tutóia to Atins.
How to get there
From Tutóia, the eastern gateway town roughly 30 km away, the drive takes around 60 minutes by car. From Barreirinhas to the west, allow around 120 minutes by car. Ferry connections are also available — a short 10-minute crossing links the area to the wider network. Parking is free and informal, on town streets near the beach.
Who it's for
For couples
The quiet, unhurried pace and wide open golden sands make this a good stop for couples who want space and wind-blown Atlantic scenery without the noise of a busy resort beach.
For families
The flat beach is easy to walk and explore, but the strong Atlantic swell and rip currents with no lifeguard service mean young children should be kept well away from the waterline — this is more of a walk-and-watch beach than a splash-and-play one.
Our take
Praia de Paulino Neves is honest about what it is: a wide, wind-driven Atlantic beach on the eastern edge of the Lençóis Maranhenses region, built for kite flyers and through-travellers rather than sunbathers chasing calm water. The rip currents and Atlantic swell are real and year-round — there is no lifeguard, and the water demands respect, not a casual dip. Arrive in February through May and you'll find a near-empty strip with little to support a visit. What it does offer — golden sand, big skies, consistent wind, and a position on a well-established kitesurf corridor — is genuinely compelling for the right traveller. Use it as a base to reach Lagoa do Alazão, push toward the national park, or catch the ferry onward. It rewards the purposeful visitor.
What to do
The beach sits within the eastern buffer zone of Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses, roughly 20 km from the park boundary — a compelling reason to push further in. Lagoa do Alazão, about 7.9 km away, offers a classic Lençóis lagoon experience worth the short detour. The village of Vassouras, around 9.5 km out, adds a quieter stop to any day on the road. Tutóia, 30 km east, is the regional hub with ferry connections and a cultural pulse that rounds out the area nicely.
The wide, flat foreground of golden sand with the blue Atlantic stretching to the horizon is the signature frame — shoot at low tide when the wet sand mirrors the sky.
The small town backdrop and any kites in the air during wind season add scale and movement to an otherwise vast, open composition.
Where to eat
Dining options are not on the beach itself — the nearest restaurants are a short drive away. Sabores da Terra is the closest at around 10 km, while Cuxá, specialising in seafood, and Maria Eduarda are both roughly 13.6 km out. For a Brazilian sit-down meal with a view, Restaurante Por do Sol is about 14.2 km away, and Toca do Caranguejo rounds out the options at around 14.6 km.
Where to stay
Pequenos Lençóis Hotel, about 10.4 km from the beach, is the closest base with proper facilities. Pousada do Paturi, roughly 13.7 km away, offers a more intimate pousada experience typical of the Lençóis region.
Photography
Shoot early morning when the golden sand catches low-angle light and the trade winds haven't yet kicked up surface haze along the waterline. The wide, flat beach gives unobstructed Atlantic horizon lines — position yourself low on the sand to frame kites or the open blue sky against the dune-backed shoreline.
Good to know
Strong Atlantic swell and rip currents are present year-round — swim with extreme caution and never enter the water alone, as there is no lifeguard service on this beach. Kitesurf zones may be designated along the beach, so check with local operators before launching or setting up any equipment. Avoid visiting between February and May: outside the wind season the beach becomes very quiet, services are severely limited, and the experience is closer to desolate than relaxing. The beach is flat and easy to walk, but there is no formal accessibility infrastructure in place.
