About

Praia do Madeiro sits along the coast of Pipa, Rio Grande do Norte, bookended by tawny sandstone cliffs that glow warm in the afternoon light. The golden sand stretches in a relaxed arc, and the emerald water shifts from glassy to lively depending on the swell. A consistent surf break draws wave-riders, while the low-key bar scene keeps the vibe unhurried — this is a beach that earns its reputation as an expat and local favourite without trying too hard. The Toca da Coruja boutique hotel watches over the scene, a quiet landmark that signals you've found the right stretch.

How to get there

From Pipa village, follow RN-003 for roughly 10 minutes by car — it's a daily route and the most straightforward option. Vans and buses also run from Pipa village and Tibau do Sul daily. At low tide, you can walk in from Cacimbinhas or Golfinhos Bay, though that route is tide-dependent so check conditions before you set out. Parking is free and informal along the roadside on RN-003 above the beach; note that the path down to the sand is unpaved and uneven, so take care on the descent.

Who it's for

For couples

The relaxed pace, low-key bars, and clifftop walks to the Mirante de Cipo make Madeiro a genuinely easy place to slow down together — no big resort energy, just golden sand and emerald water at a beach that locals still call their own.

For families

Families with older children who surf or bodyboard will find the consistent break a real draw, but parents should note the rip currents and the absence of lifeguard cover — younger or non-swimming children are better kept near the shore bars in calmer water.

Our take

Rip currents are present at Madeiro and there is no confirmed lifeguard service — that's the first thing to know, and it shapes how you use this beach. With that said, Madeiro is one of the most genuinely appealing stretches along the Pipa coastline: golden sand, emerald water, sandstone cliffs at both ends, and a surf break that actually delivers. The low-key bar scene keeps things honest — this isn't a beach that's been polished for tourism, and that's exactly why expats and locals keep coming back. Walk in from Cacimbinhas at low tide if you want to earn the arrival. Stay for the afternoon light on the cliffs.— The wmb team

What to do

The beach itself is the main draw, but the Mirante de Cipo viewpoint is just 0.4 km away and rewards the short walk with views over the cliffs. A little further, the Santuário Ecológico de Pipa at around 0.7 km protects Atlantic Forest fragments above the clifftops — a rare patch of green worth exploring. If you're up for a low-tide adventure, Praia de Cacimbinhas, about 1.5 km out, offers natural freshwater rock pools tucked between sandstone headlands. Further afield, Lagoa Guaraíras, roughly 6 km away, is the spot for kite surfing and sunset boat tours on a large coastal lagoon.

Instagram spots

The tawny sandstone cliffs at either end of the beach are the defining frame — shoot from the sand looking up at golden hour when the rock face glows against the emerald water.

The Mirante de Cipo viewpoint, just 0.4 km away, gives you a clean elevated shot of the full beach arc and the surf break below.

Where to eat

Praia do Barravento, about 1.3 km from the beach, is the closest dining option and a natural first stop after a morning in the water. For more variety, Lampião and Umai are both within 2.1 km, while Sabor da Síria and Trio round out the options a little further along at around 2.3 km. There's a low-key bar scene on the beach itself, so you won't go thirsty between meals.

Where to stay

Hotel Madeiro Beach chalés sits just 0.1 km from the sand — it doesn't get more convenient than that. Ponta do Madeiro Pousada is a short 1.1 km away, and Sun Bay Hotel Pipa offers another option at 1.8 km. If you want to stay in the boutique hotel that overlooks the beach itself, Toca da Coruja is about 2.2 km out and is a well-regarded address in the area.

Photography

The sandstone cliffs at both ends of the beach are the standout shot — catch them in the late afternoon when the warm light turns the tawny rock almost amber against the emerald water. For a wider perspective, the Mirante de Cipo viewpoint, 0.4 km away, gives you an elevated frame of the golden sand arc and the surf break below.

Good to know

Rip currents are present at Madeiro — non-swimmers should stay close to the shore bars and out of deeper water. There is no confirmed lifeguard service, so take care when swimming. The surf break is active, and swimmers must stay well clear of it; surfers have right of way in the break zone. The nearest major airport is Rio Grande do Norte's Governador Aluízio Alves International Airport (NAT), about 60 km away, so factor in transfer time when planning your arrival.
