Meio Beach
Fernando de Noronha's quiet golden strip between two icons

About
Praia do Meio is a narrow band of golden sand tucked between two of Fernando de Noronha's most visited beaches, yet it draws only a handful of visitors on any given day. The calm, turquoise waters of the Mar de Dentro lap gently at the shore, making it one of the more sheltered spots on the island. A dramatic volcanic rock stack anchors the east end, giving the beach a sculptural quality that sets it apart from its neighbours. There's no infrastructure here — no chairs, no vendors, no shade structures — just sand, sea, and the occasional local. That absence of amenities is precisely the point.
How to get there
Praia do Meio is easy to reach on foot from Vila dos Remédios via a coastal path in around 8 minutes, or by car, buggy, or taxi to Bar do Meio followed by a short walk down to the sand. There's no dedicated parking — drop-offs happen roadside near Conceição. All visitors to Fernando de Noronha must pay the national park entry fee before accessing the beach.
Who it's for
For couples
Praia do Meio's unhurried pace and lack of facilities make it a genuinely private escape — spread out on the golden sand with the volcanic stack as your backdrop and the calm turquoise water in front of you, and it feels like the island kept this one for itself.
For families
The calm Mar de Dentro water is more forgiving than the open-ocean beaches, which suits families with children who want to splash around safely — but note there is no lifeguard, no shade, and no facilities, so come fully prepared with water, snacks, and sun protection.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
No lifeguard, no sunbeds, no smoothie stand — Praia do Meio makes no effort to impress you, and that's exactly why it works. While the adjacent beaches fill up with daytrippers, this narrow strip of golden sand stays quiet because it offers nothing except the thing you actually came to Fernando de Noronha for: calm turquoise water, volcanic scenery, and space to breathe. The Mar de Dentro is genuinely calm here, making it one of the more swimmable spots on the island outside swell season — but stay alert from January to May when stronger waves arrive. Pair it with a walk to Praia da Conceição and a stop at Forte dos Remédios and you have a full, unhurried morning. True digital-detox territory — bring offline books, the cell signal fades and there's nowhere to plug in a laptop. Worth every minute of the 8-minute walk.
What to do
The volcanic rock stack at the east end of the beach is worth exploring up close at low tide, and the calm Mar de Dentro water is ideal for a quiet swim when conditions allow. Just 0.2 km away, Praia da Conceição offers a wide golden arc with a reef tidal pool and the iconic Morro do Pico as a backdrop — easy to combine in one morning. History lovers can walk to Forte dos Remédios, a well-preserved 18th-century Portuguese colonial fort on the cliff above Porto Beach, about 1.2 km away. For a longer outing, Morro do Pico at 3.5 km is the island's highest point at 321 m and rewards the climb with panoramic views across the archipelago.
The volcanic rock stack at the east end is the standout frame — shoot it from the waterline at low tide with the turquoise Mar de Dentro behind it for maximum contrast.
The coastal path from Vila dos Remédios gives you a rare elevated view of the narrow golden sand strip with Praia da Conceição stretching out beyond, best captured in the soft morning light.
Where to eat
There's nothing to eat or drink on the beach itself, so plan ahead. Mare and Dell Isola are both around 0.4 km away and are your closest options after a morning on the sand. Aguida Bistro and Xica da Silva are a short walk further at 0.6–0.7 km, with Crepería Euforonha rounding out the nearby choices if you're after something light.
Where to stay
Morro do Farol is the only listed accommodation in the area, sitting 1.6 km from the beach. Fernando de Noronha is a small island, so most places to stay put you within easy reach of Praia do Meio regardless of where you base yourself.
Photography
The volcanic rock stack at the east end frames a striking shot against the turquoise water — arrive in the morning when the light hits from the east and the beach is at its emptiest. For a wider composition, the elevated coastal path approaching from Vila dos Remédios gives you a clean overhead angle of the golden sand strip with Praia da Conceição visible just beyond.
Good to know
No lifeguard is on duty, so swim with awareness of your own ability — the swimming conditions are rated moderate. During the swell season from January to May, stronger waves push in from the Atlantic and require extra caution in the water. Bring your own water and sun protection: there are zero facilities on the beach. National park rules apply in full — no glass containers, no camping, and dogs are prohibited anywhere within the park.
