About

Praia do Amor sits inside a horseshoe enclosure of red sandstone cliffs on the coast of Pipa, Rio Grande do Norte, in Northeast Brazil. The white sand stretches roughly 1,184 metres, lapped by turquoise water that pools into tidal pools when the tide pulls back. Photographers and couples are drawn to the cliff-top viewpoint above, where the full sweep of the cove comes into frame. The geology here is striking — layered red sandstone worn into curves and overhangs that glow warm at golden hour. The vibe is romantic, the setting theatrical, and the beach earns its name.

How to get there

From Pipa village centre you can hike to the beach in about 15 minutes on foot, daily, or combine a 5-minute drive with a short hike from the same starting point. Walking along the shore from Praia do Centro takes around 10 minutes but is only possible at low tide — check tide tables before you set off. Paid parking is available at the trailhead for R$ 20 per day; street parking in Pipa village before the trailhead is an alternative. The cliff path down to the beach involves steps and is not accessible for wheelchairs.

Who it's for

For couples

The romantic vibe is built into the name and the geography — a secluded cove, a dramatic rock arch, and a cliff-top viewpoint made for two. Come in the dry season shoulder months for quieter mornings and that turquoise water at its clearest.

For families

The tidal pools at low tide give children a safe, sheltered place to explore marine life without the risks of the open sea. Keep the strong wave and return current warnings in mind and stay well clear of the water's edge in the open bay — the pools are the family-friendly zone here.

Our take

Praia do Amor earns its reputation on geology and drama alone — the red sandstone arch, the horseshoe cliffs, the turquoise water — but safety comes first here. Strong waves and return currents make open-sea swimming genuinely dangerous; stay in the tidal pools at low tide and keep away from the water's edge in the main bay. The cliff path is steep and unfenced in places, so take the safety barriers seriously and watch your footing on slippery rock. Time your visit for the dry season between May and October, arrive early, and you'll have one of Northeast Brazil's most photogenic coves at its best. Avoid December through February without question — the combination of extreme visitor numbers and the start of the rainy season works against you on every front. The 15-minute hike from Pipa village is part of the experience; don't rush it.— The wmb team

What to do

At low tide, explore the tidal pools along the base of the cliffs and walk the shoreline toward Praia do Centro. The cliff-top viewpoint above the beach is the best vantage point for the rock arch and the full horseshoe bay — worth the climb even if you don't descend. A short distance away, the Santuário Ecológico de Pipa protects fragments of Atlantic Forest above the cliffs, and Baía dos Golfinhos — a protected ecological reserve bay with a resident pod of spinner dolphins — is just 2.5 km along the coast. For a change of pace, Lagoa Guaraíras, about 5 km away, offers kite surfing and sunset boat tours on a large coastal lagoon.

Instagram spots

Climb to the cliff-top viewpoint in the late afternoon for the red sandstone glow and turquoise water below — one of the most rewarding angles on the beach.

At low tide, position yourself in the tidal pools for a ground-level reflection shot with the horseshoe cliffs rising behind you. The cliff-top viewpoint also gives a wide aerial-style frame of the full white-sand cove that works beautifully in the early morning light before the beach fills up.

Where to eat

Right at the beach, Mais Amor keeps things convenient for a post-swim bite, while Amô is just 0.1 km away and a reliable stop for a meal. A short walk of around 0.5 km brings you to Bambu Beach and Love Beach, both close enough for a lazy lunch, and Taipa Brasil at 0.6 km is worth seeking out for regional northeastern cooking.

Where to stay

Luz da Lua, just 0.2 km from the beach, is the closest place to rest your head after a long day on the sand. Hotel Sombra e Água Fresca at 0.4 km and Pousada Catavento at 0.8 km offer solid mid-range options within easy walking distance of the trailhead. Pousada Sonho Meu and Pipa Mar round out the choices a little further into the village.

Photography

The natural rock arch and the horseshoe cliff enclosure are the headline shots — frame them from the cliff-top viewpoint at sunrise or late afternoon when the red sandstone catches warm directional light. At low tide, the tidal pools mirror the sky and the cliffs, giving you a second set of compositions at beach level that no telephoto can replicate from above.

Good to know

No motorised vehicles are permitted on the beach, and you must respect cliff-edge safety barriers — some sections of the cliff are unfenced and the rocks can be slippery and sharp. Strong waves and return currents can make swimming in the open sea dangerous; do not enter the water without checking conditions first. Access to the tidal pools and the shore walk from Praia do Centro is tide-dependent, so always check tide tables on the day. The beach is extremely packed from December through February and during Carnival — arrive before 09h or after 16h if you visit during those periods, and ideally avoid those months altogether.
