Tairua Beach
Beige sands, turquoise water, Paku Hill watching over

About
Tairua Beach stretches roughly 1,800 metres along the Coromandel Peninsula's eastern coast, where beige sand meets turquoise water and the dramatic volcanic cone of Paku Hill rises at the southern end. The harbour estuary mouth adds a dynamic edge — tidal flows shape the shoreline and give the beach a restless, living quality. Across the water, Pauanui's long surf beach sits in plain view, a constant reminder that you're in one of New Zealand's most rewarding coastal pockets. The township sits right behind the dunes, so everything you need — food, accommodation, services — is within easy reach. It's a patrolled surf beach with a relaxed, unhurried pace that suits families and solo travellers equally.
How to get there
From Thames, drive south on SH25 — Tairua is about 35 minutes away, and the road runs daily. Free parking is available on Ocean Beach Road, right alongside the beach. Auckland International Airport (AKL) is roughly 95.5 km away, making this a realistic weekend escape from the city. No entry fee applies.
Who it's for
For couples
The walk up Paku Hill at dusk, with the harbour glowing below and Pauanui visible across the water, is one of those simple moments that doesn't need embellishment. Tairua's relaxed pace and compact township mean you can move easily between beach, food, and scenery without a car.
For families
The patrolled surf beach with flags clearly marking safe swimming zones takes a lot of the guesswork out of a family beach day. The flat beach, easy road access, free parking, and full township services mean you're never far from what you need — and the Paku Hill track is manageable for older kids.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Rip currents at the estuary mouth are real and should be taken seriously — stay between the flags and keep well away from the harbour entrance when swimming. With that clearly understood, Tairua Beach is one of the Coromandel's most complete beach destinations: 1,800 metres of beige sand, turquoise water, a patrolled break, and a functioning township right behind the dunes. Paku Hill alone is worth the drive from Auckland — the summit view over the harbour and across to Pauanui is as good as coastal New Zealand gets. The relaxed pace here is genuine, not performed. It suits families, surfers, and anyone who wants a beach with actual infrastructure rather than a remote slog. Best visited December through March; outside peak summer it's quieter and the light stays long.
What to do
Paku Hill is the obvious first stop — a volcanic cone just 0.5 km from the beach with a walking track to the summit and panoramic views over Tairua, the harbour, and Pauanui beyond. If you want to extend the adventure, Pauanui Beach is 3.3 km away and accessible by water taxi across the harbour. Further afield, Coromandel Forest Park at 19.3 km offers native bush walking tracks and waterfalls for a half-day inland detour. There's also a local art gallery 1.4 km away and the Pumpkin Hill viewpoint at 2.2 km for another elevated perspective on the coastline.
The summit of Paku Hill frames the entire beige sand beach, turquoise harbour, and Pauanui coastline in a single wide shot — go at golden hour for the best light.
Down at beach level, the estuary mouth at low tide offers layered foreground textures with the volcanic cone rising behind, a composition you won't find at any other Coromandel beach.
Where to eat
Punters Bar and Grill and Tairua Landing Restaurant and Cafe are both about 1.4 km from the beach — close enough to walk to after a surf session. If you're after a coffee and a seat with your laptop, Manaia Cafe and Bar is also 1.4 km away and is the nearest laptop-friendly option in town.
Where to stay
Paku Lodge Resort Motel (rated 4.6/5 from 191 reviews) sits just 0.7 km from the beach and is the closest quality option. For budget travellers, Tairua BeachHouse Backpackers at 0.8 km holds a strong 4.5/5 from 84 reviews. The standout for campers is Tairua Campground — 1.3 km away and rated an exceptional 4.9/5 across 361 reviews, which says a lot about the experience.
Photography
Climb Paku Hill at sunrise for sweeping shots of the turquoise harbour, the beige sand arc below, and Pauanui stretching across the water — the light at that hour is clean and directional. At beach level, the estuary mouth at low tide creates interesting foreground texture; shoot looking south with Paku cone in the frame for the most distinctive Tairua composition.
Good to know
Always swim between the flags — this is a patrolled surf beach and the flags mark the safest zone. The estuary mouth is a genuine hazard: rip currents near the harbour entrance are strong and unpredictable, so stay well clear of that area when swimming. Dogs are welcome on the beach outside patrolled swimming hours, so early mornings are ideal for a walk with your dog. The township has full services year-round, but peak summer months bring more visitors, so arrive early to secure parking and a good patch of sand.
