大平頂海崖 BeachTaiwan Beach Guide
Wild limestone cliff, rope descent, blue water below

About
Dapingdingsits at the southern tip of Taiwan near Hengchun, a raw limestone terrace that drops sharply to a cobble beach and deep blue water. There is no sand here — just flat coral rock underfoot, rounded stones at the waterline, and open ocean stretching south. The site is a known free diving spot, valued for its deep-water channel and the silence that comes with genuinely difficult access. You reach the beach only by rope descent, which keeps visitor numbers close to zero. The vibe is wild in the truest sense: no facilities, no signage, no safety net.
How to get there
The only way in is on foot from the Eluanbi Park area — allow around 30 minutes each way on a trail that ends with an informal rope descent to the terrace below. There is no parking at the beach itself; use Eluanbi Park parking and hike in. No entry fee is documented, but national park rules apply throughout. The rope descent is unmanaged and entirely at your own risk — do not attempt it after rain or if you are an inexperienced hiker.
Who it's for
For couples
For couples who are both confident, experienced hikers, the rope descent and the silence at the bottom — just cobblestones, blue water, and no one else — make for an genuinely memorable shared experience. This is not a romantic stroll; it demands physical commitment from both people.
For families
Dapingdingis not suitable for families with children. The rope descent is unmanaged and dangerous, the cobble beach is slippery, there are strong currents in the water, and there are no facilities whatsoever. Eluanbi Park, just 0.4 km away, is a far safer and more rewarding choice for families.
Our take
Do not come here expecting a beach day. Swimming is dangerous — strong currents run through the deep-water channel, there is no lifeguard, and the cobble beach is slippery. Get that clearly in your head before the hike starts. What Dapingding does offer is something genuinely rare: a flat coral limestone terrace at the southern edge of Taiwan, empty, wild, and earned by a rope descent that most people will never attempt. Free divers know it; almost nobody else does. Come in the dry season, go with someone experienced, and treat the rope as the serious obstacle it is. The nearby Eluanbi Lighthouse and the Southernmost Point of Taiwan mean the journey out here can be a full half-day even if you spend only a short time on the terrace itself.
What to do
The Eluanbi Lighthouse and Eluanbi Park are both roughly 0.4 km away and make a natural pairing with the hike. From the flat limestone terrace at Dapingding itself, the view south toward the open Pacific is the main draw, and experienced free divers come specifically for the deep-water channel. A short walk of around 0.8 km brings you to the Southernmost Point of Taiwan, a landmark worth ticking off while you're in the area.
The flat limestone terrace looking south over the deep blue water is the defining shot — shoot wide to capture the cliff edge and the open Pacific beyond.
The cobble beach framed from above, with the rope descent visible in the foreground, conveys the raw difficulty of reaching this place and sets it apart from any standard coastal image.
Where to eat
There are no food or drink facilities at the beach, so carry everything you need. Mambo Thai Restaurant is around 6.9 km away, while Kenting restaurant and Nossa are both roughly 7.6 km from the site — all reachable after you return to the main road.
Where to stay
Fullon Resort is the closest option at around 5.3 km, offering a comfortable base for exploring the southern tip. Howard Beach Resort Kenting is roughly 6.4 km away and another solid choice if you want to reach the trail in the morning.
Photography
The flat limestone terrace is the standout shooting position — frame the deep blue water and the drop below in the soft light of early morning before haze builds. The cobble beach at the base of the cliff, shot from the terrace edge looking down, gives a strong sense of the site's scale and isolation.
Good to know
The rope descent is informal, unmanaged, and not suitable after rain or for inexperienced hikers — turn back if conditions look wet or the rope is frayed. Once down, the cobble beach is slippery and the deep-water channel carries strong currents: do not enter the water. There is no lifeguard and no managed facilities of any kind. Avoid visiting in December, January, February, and March, when the northeast monsoon makes the rope descent actively dangerous.
