About

Longpan Grassland Coast sits on a dramatic limestone plateau above the Pacific in Hengchun, southern Taiwan. There is no sand here — just sheer cliffs dropping into deep blue ocean, and an open grassland plateau swept by year-round strong winds. The scale is stark and the horizon is unobstructed, with the Pacific stretching away in every direction. It's a wild, elemental place that rewards those who come to look, not to swim.

How to get there

From Hengchun, it's a 20-minute drive or a 15-minute bus ride (check schedules). Coming from Eluanbi, it's just 10 minutes by car. Roadside pull-off parking is available — informal mixed parking with a nominal fee of NT$40–50 that may apply seasonally, or may be free.

Who it's for

For couples

The wild, quiet atmosphere and unobstructed Pacific panorama make this a compelling stop for couples who prefer raw scenery over beach lounging — a coastal walk across the grassland with the wind at your back is as romantic as it is exhilarating.

For families

Families with young children should approach with real caution: there are no barriers at the cliff edge, the terrain is uneven, and there is no swimming or beach play of any kind. Older children who can be trusted near exposed clifftops will find the geology and views genuinely impressive.

Our take

Do not come here expecting a beach — there isn't one, and that is entirely the point. Longpan Grassland Coast is a place that refuses to be comfortable or convenient. The cliffs are sheer, the winds are relentless, and the Pacific stretches away without interruption. Stay back from the edge: there are no barriers, the ground is uneven, and conditions can turn fast. Avoid December through February when conditions near the cliff become genuinely hazardous. Come for the geology, the views, and the rare sensation of standing somewhere that hasn't been softened for tourists.— The wmb team

What to do

Longpan Park is right on your doorstep, and the Longpan Park Prairie — just 0.5 km away — is ideal for a windswept coastal walk with sweeping Pacific views. A short drive of around 2.8 km brings you to Eluanbi Lighthouse. For geology lovers, Jialeshui Scenic Area, about 8 km away, showcases wind-sculpted coral rock formations along the east coast, while Shading Beach Ecological Reserve, 3 km away, protects a rare biogenic shell-fragment sand beach.

Instagram spots

The most striking frame is the sheer limestone cliff edge shot from a safe distance back, with the deep blue Pacific filling the lower half of the image.

The open grassland plateau offers wide compositions with wind-bent grass in the foreground and an unbroken ocean horizon behind. Eluanbi Lighthouse, just 2.8 km away, makes a strong complementary shot if you're building a southern Taiwan series.

Where to eat

There are no restaurants at the coast itself, so eat before you arrive. The nearest dining options are back toward Kenting — roughly 13 to 14 km away — where you'll find a steamed buns spot, Beef Noodle, and Milano Pizzeria Kenting for pizza. Pack water and snacks; the wind will make you thirsty.

Where to stay

Fullon Resort, about 3.3 km away, is the closest base for the night. Howard Beach Resort Kenting is a little further at 4.5 km. Both put you within easy striking distance of the plateau for an early-morning visit before the day-trippers arrive.

Photography

The cliff edge at Longpan — shot from a safe distance back — frames the deep blue Pacific against pale limestone in a way that is genuinely dramatic; early morning light hits the rock face cleanly. The open grassland plateau also works well for wide-angle shots with the ocean horizon as a backdrop, particularly when the wind is bending the grass.

Good to know

There are no barriers at the cliff edge — stay well back, especially in wet or windy conditions, which are the norm here. Do not attempt to access the water: there is no beach, no safe entry point, and swimming is strictly prohibited. Strong winds blow year-round and are at their most dangerous in winter — avoid standing near the cliff edge in December, January, and February. The terrain across the grassland to the cliff edge is uneven and not wheelchair accessible.
