Transit Hill Beach
Reef wall at your feet, island silence all around

About
Transit Hill Beach is a compact strip of white sand on Lord Howe Island, tucked beneath the gentle rise of Transit Hill and opening directly onto the island's UNESCO-listed marine park. The water runs turquoise and clear, and a coral wall drops away within 20 metres of the shoreline — close enough that you can fin out and be over living reef in under a minute. At roughly 100 metres long, it's an intimate spot: no facilities, no vendors, no noise beyond the lap of the lagoon. Locals know it as one of the quietest entry points to the reef, and on a calm summer morning, the place feels entirely your own.
How to get there
From Island Settlement, you can reach Transit Hill Beach by bike in about 10 minutes along Lagoon Rd and Transit Hill Track — the most popular way to get here. On foot, various tracks from the settlement take around 30 minutes. There is no dedicated parking area; if you drive, roadside stopping on Transit Hill Track is your only option, so two wheels genuinely make more sense.
Who it's for
For couples
The quiet atmosphere and the shared experience of snorkelling a coral wall together — with no facilities to distract and no other visitors to visitors you — makes Transit Hill Beach a genuinely private escape for two.
For families
The easy access by bike and the shallow sandy entry make it approachable for older children confident in the water, though the lack of any facilities means you'll need to bring everything — snacks, water, and first aid included.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Transit Hill Beach earns its reputation quietly. It's small, stripped back, and entirely without the infrastructure that most beach guides treat as a given — and that's exactly the point. The reef wall within 20 metres of shore is the kind of access that divers and snorkellers travel a long way to find, and here it's reached by a 10-minute bike ride from the settlement. No facilities means you plan ahead or go without, so treat this like a backcountry stop rather than a resort beach. Come between December and March for the clearest water and warmest conditions; skip the winter months when clarity fades. If you want Lord Howe Island's reef without the guided-tour structure, this is where locals go.
What to do
The reef edge within 20 metres of shore is the main event — strap on a mask and you're inside Lord Howe Island Marine Park almost immediately, with the coral wall accessible directly from this entry point. After a snorkel, the short walk up to Transit Hill (0.3 km) rewards you with sweeping lagoon views that reframe the whole beach from above. The Viewing Platform and the curious 1982 Time Capsule are both just 0.2 km away if you want a quick detour before or after the water.
Stand at the water's edge and frame the turquoise lagoon against the white sand with Transit Hill rising behind — morning light keeps the colours saturated and the scene shadow-free.
The Viewing Platform 0.2 km up the track gives a top-down shot of the beach's full arc and the reef's colour gradient fading from pale turquoise to deep blue.
Where to eat
There are no food or drink options at the beach itself, so pack everything before you leave. Pinetrees Restaurant is 0.7 km away and the Bowling Club is 0.8 km — both are close enough to reach quickly by bike. For something a little further afield, Miss Saigon Restaurant is 1.2 km from the beach.
Where to stay
Waimarie Apartments sits just 0.4 km from the beach and holds a perfect five-star rating across its reviews — hard to beat for proximity. Pinetrees Lodge (0.7 km) is the island's best-known property and offers a coworking space if you need to stay connected. Bowker Beach House at 0.9 km and Hide Away Apartments at 1 km are both highly rated and keep you within easy cycling distance.
Photography
Shoot from the waterline at low angle in the early morning to capture the turquoise water against the white sand with Transit Hill as a natural backdrop — the soft southern-hemisphere light before 9 am is ideal. The Viewing Platform 0.2 km away gives an elevated perspective over the lagoon and the beach's full length, best in the late afternoon when the water colour deepens.
Good to know
No facilities or emergency equipment exist on site — bring water, sun protection, and a first-aid kit. Marine park rules apply throughout: do not touch or stand on coral, and fishing requires a permit. Avoid June, July, and August when water clarity drops and temperatures cool noticeably. Snorkel within your ability; swimming is rated moderate, so less confident swimmers should stay close to the sandy shallows.
