Middle Beach
Lord Howe's quiet local patch, white sand and turquoise reef
About
Middle Beach is a compact, unhurried strip of white sand on Lord Howe Island, tucked behind a garden fence that gives it the feel of someone's backyard — because, in a way, it is. The water runs a clear turquoise right up to a reef edge sitting just 50 metres offshore, creating a shallow, sheltered swim zone that locals return to every single day. At roughly 150 metres long, it never feels like a destination beach, and that's precisely the point. No tourist foot traffic, no facilities, no noise — just the soft lap of the lagoon and the occasional neighbour walking down for a morning dip.
How to get there
Middle Beach sits a short 5-minute drive from the Island Settlement via Middle Beach Road — easy going by Lord Howe Island standards. There's no dedicated car park; roadside stopping along Middle Beach Road is the only option, so keep it tidy and don't block private driveways. Access to the sand itself is easy on foot, though the narrow strip has no paved path down to the water.
Who it's for
For couples
The absence of tourist foot traffic and the intimate 150-metre scale make Middle Beach an easy choice for couples who want a swim without an audience — bring a book, share the reef, and have the place largely to yourselves.
For families
The sheltered, safe swimming zone and easy access make it manageable with kids, but keep younger children in the sandy shallows well clear of the reef edge, which drops quickly at 50 metres out. No facilities means you'll need to pack everything in.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Middle Beach doesn't perform for visitors — it just exists, quietly, for the people who live here. That restraint is its entire appeal. The white sand is clean, the turquoise water is safe inside the reef, and the reef edge 50 metres out rewards anyone who brings a mask. Be clear-eyed about the drop-off beyond the sand: it's not a place to drift without awareness. Come between December and March for the best water temperatures, arrive early, and leave no trace. This is a neighbourhood beach on a UNESCO-listed island — treat it accordingly.
What to do
The reef edge 50 metres out is the main draw — snorkelling over coral in the UNESCO-listed Lord Howe Island Marine Park is the reason most people linger longer than planned. At low tide, rock pools and coral formations are accessible about 500 metres away, worth a slow explore. Lagoon Beach, just 500 metres along the coast, offers a full 2 kilometres of pale sand and reef snorkelling if you want more space. The Kentia Palm Nursery, 300 metres away, is a genuinely interesting detour into the island's most famous export.
The garden fence framing white sand and turquoise water is the signature shot — position yourself at the southern end of the beach for the full domestic-meets-tropical contrast.
At low tide, wade to knee depth and shoot back toward the shore with the reef shimmer in the foreground for a second, less obvious frame.
Where to eat
The Bowling Club and Miss Saigon Restaurant are both around 400 metres away and cover the casual end of the spectrum after a swim. For something more considered, Pinetrees Restaurant at 700 metres and Arajilla Restaurant at 1.2 kilometres are solid options for an evening meal. Middle Beach itself has zero on-site facilities, so bring water and snacks.
Where to stay
Hide Away Apartments and Leanda Lei Apartments are effectively on the doorstep — both under 100 metres away and rated highly by guests. Earls Anchorage, 300 metres out, carries a strong 4.8/5 from 23 reviews and is a reliable pick for a comfortable base.
Photography
Shoot from the waterline in the early morning when the turquoise water is glassy and the garden fence backdrop catches soft light — the contrast between the domestic and the tropical is the shot. Low tide reveals the reef texture just offshore, giving depth to wide-angle frames looking out toward the lagoon.
Good to know
Respect the adjacent private properties — the garden fence backdrop is charming, but the homes behind it are lived in year-round, so keep noise down and stay on the sand. Marine park rules apply here: no collecting shells, coral, or marine life, and take all rubbish with you when you leave. The reef edge drops away quickly just 50 metres offshore — confident swimmers only beyond the sandy shallows, and children should stay well within the sheltered zone. Skip June, July, and August; cooler water temperatures make casual swimming far less appealing.
