Slokas ezera piekraste BeachLatvia Beach Guide
Wild Latvian lagoon where birds rule the shore

About
Slokas ezera piekraste is a wild, reed-fringed brackish lagoon shore on the edge of Jūrmala, Latvia — a place where grey sand meets brown water and the pine skyline mirrors itself across the still surface. This is not a swimming beach; it's a living wetland ecosystem where avocets pick through the shallows and marsh harriers quarter the reed beds overhead. The air hums with insects in summer, and the silence between birdcalls is the kind you travel far to find. It draws birdwatchers and nature photographers rather than sunbathers, and on most days you'll have the entire shoreline to yourself.
How to get there
From Jūrmala or Ķemeri, the site is roughly a 15-minute drive and reachable daily by car. Follow the Dūņu ceļš track to its end, where a small free parking area is available. There is no entry fee. Note that the track and ground near the reed edge can be soft, and conditions vary with the season.
Who it's for
For couples
Couples who prefer binoculars to beach towels will find this a quietly rewarding escape — an almost empty shoreline, big skies, and the shared pleasure of spotting avocets working the shallows.
For families
Families with older children interested in nature and wildlife will get more from this site than young children expecting a typical beach day — there is no safe swimming, the ground near the water is soft, and the experience is entirely about observation and quiet.
Our take
Do not come here expecting a beach day — Slokas ezera piekraste is a wetland, and the water is strictly off-limits for swimming due to the soft muddy bottom. What it offers instead is rare: an almost empty brackish lagoon shore inside the Jūrmala commune, with grey sand underfoot, brown water ahead, and some of Latvia's most rewarding birdwatching overhead. Avocets and marsh harriers are the headline act, and the pine skyline reflected in still water at dawn is genuinely photogenic. The mosquitoes are real in summer — pack repellent and treat it as essential kit, not optional. If you pair this with the Ķemeri National Park bog boardwalk a few kilometres away, you have a full day of serious nature immersion. This is a place for people who know what they're looking for.
What to do
The Ķemeri National Park is just 2.1 km away and is the natural companion to a visit here — its famous bog boardwalk, Latvia's most visited nature trail, lies about 6 km from the shore and is well worth the short detour. The historic Ķemeri Sulphur Springs, remnants of a former spa resort, are around 7 km away. For a different kind of coastal solitude, the remote Jaunķemeri Beach — accessed through protected coastal forest — is about 4 km from the lagoon shore.
The reflection of the pine skyline in the still brown water at first light is the signature shot — get low on the grey sand for maximum mirror effect.
The reed fringe at the lagoon's edge, with open sky behind and a marsh harrier in frame if you're patient, makes for a compelling wetland composition.
Where to eat
The closest option is Neptūns, about 2.1 km away — a practical stop before or after a morning at the lagoon. RedBus pica, a pizza spot, is 3.4 km out, and Četri Kaķi is 3.7 km away. Bring your own snacks and water if you plan to spend time in the field — there is nothing on-site.
Where to stay
NRC 'Vaivari' is the nearest place to stay, around 7.4 km from the lagoon. Further afield, Alba is about 10.7 km away, and SIVA hotel is 12.6 km out. Options are limited close to the site, so book ahead if visiting during the June–September season.
Photography
The best shots come at dawn or dusk, when the pine skyline reflects cleanly across the brown water and the reed fringe comes alive. Position yourself at the water's edge — carefully, given the soft ground — and shoot into the light for silhouettes of reed fringe and open lagoon.
Good to know
Do not enter the water — this is not a swimming location; the lagoon has a soft muddy bottom that makes it genuinely dangerous. Keep dogs on a lead near the reed beds, and do not disturb nesting birds at any time. Mosquitoes can be intense in summer, so bring repellent. Avoid visiting between December and February: the track can be icy, birds are largely absent, and conditions are harsh.
