Amado Beach
Wild Atlantic surf on Portugal's untamed western coast

About
Praia do Amado sits on the Costa Vicentina, a protected nature reserve on Portugal's Atlantic-facing western edge — one of the last genuinely wild stretches of European coastline. Golden sand meets open blue ocean under wide Algarve skies, with the kind of raw, wind-sculpted scenery that reminds you nature is still in charge here. The beach is a well-known surf destination, hosting competitions that draw riders from across Europe. Backed by rugged cliffs and dune-covered headlands, it carries a vibe that's more elemental than resort. Come for the waves, the space, and the unfiltered Atlantic energy.
How to get there
From Carrapateira village, the beach is just a 5-minute drive — the most practical option. Buses run from Lisbon's Estação Rodoviária de Sete Rios six times a week (roughly 250 minutes), and a daily service connects Lagos Terminal Rodoviário to Vila do Bispo, from where taxis run on demand. Large free parking areas sit directly above the beach — no app, no ticket machine, no fee.
Who it's for
For couples
The wild, open setting and long golden beach make Praia do Amado a strong choice for couples who want scenery without the resort trappings — walk the cliff edge at dusk and you'll have the Atlantic horizon almost to yourselves.
For families
Families should be cautious: rip currents and submerged rocks mean swimming requires real vigilance, and the beach is rated moderate for swimming safety. Older children who surf or bodyboard will love it; younger kids are better kept to the sand and rock-pooling at low tide with a close eye on conditions.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Praia do Amado is not a beach you come to switch off and float. Rip currents are real, submerged rocks are real, and the cliff edges demand respect — read those safety warnings before you step onto the sand. That said, for surfers and anyone who wants raw Atlantic coastline inside a protected nature reserve, this place delivers without compromise. The golden sand is wide, the blue ocean is powerful, and the Costa Vicentina setting means development stays firmly in the background. Getting here takes a little effort — especially without a car — but the free parking and the 5-minute drive from Carrapateira make it straightforward once you're in the region. Come between June and September for the best conditions, go early to claim your patch of sand, and keep your eyes on the water at all times.
What to do
Monte Velho Eco Resort, 2.6km away, offers activities in keeping with the nature-reserve setting. For dramatic coastal views, the Miradouro Praia da Barriga (5.7km) and Miradouro de Cordoama (7.5km) both reward the short drive with sweeping Atlantic panoramas. When surf competitions are on, the beach itself becomes the main event — check local calendars before you visit.
The clifftop above the free parking area gives a sweeping elevated view of the golden sand and blue Atlantic — best at golden hour when the light is side-on.
Down on the beach, the surf break with the rugged cliff backdrop makes a strong frame, especially during competition days when riders are in the water.
Where to eat
Amado Beach Bar Snacks is right on your doorstep at 0.3km — the obvious stop for a post-surf bite without going far. For something more substantial, Petisqueira Refinada is 2km away, and L'Colesterol is another option at 2.7km. If you fancy a change of pace, Pizza Pazza serves Italian-style pizza about 4.7km from the beach.
Where to stay
The closest accommodation options are Mira Sagres and Quinta Das Andorinhas, both around 9.4km from the beach — close enough for an easy morning drive to catch the early swell. A Maré (13.2km) and Casa Brybeg (14.4km) offer further alternatives if those are full.
Photography
Shoot from the clifftops above the parking area at golden hour — the low Atlantic light turns the golden sand amber and the blue ocean deepens dramatically. Early morning, before the surf session starts, gives you clean foreground lines with the cliff formations framing the bay.
Good to know
Hidden rock formations lurk under the water, especially at low tide — check conditions before entering. Strong rip currents can develop with larger swells; if you're not an experienced surfer reading the water, stay out. Keep well back from the cliff edges: rockfall is a documented risk here. The beach sits inside a protected nature reserve, so treat the dunes and vegetation with care.
