Arrifana Beach
Wild Atlantic cliffs, golden sand, serious surf

About
Praia de Arrifana sits on Portugal's Costa Vicentina, a stretch of Atlantic coastline protected inside a natural reserve where development stays minimal and the landscape stays raw. Towering basalt cliffs frame a wide arc of golden sand, and the blue ocean rolls in with the kind of consistent swell that draws surfers from across Europe. The ruins of a small fort watch over the bay from the headland, adding a weathered, historic edge to an already dramatic scene. It's a wild beach in the truest sense — the wind carries salt, the cliffs loom, and the horizon is uninterrupted Atlantic.
How to get there
From Faro Airport the drive takes roughly 75 minutes; from the nearby town of Aljezur it's just 15 minutes by car. Free parking is available at the top of the cliffs — use that. The steep road descending to the beach is reserved for residents and fills up fast in summer, so don't attempt to park on it. If you're coming without a car, a bus runs from Lisbon to Aljezur three times a day (around 4 hours), from where you can take a taxi or local bus the remaining 15 minutes to the beach.
Who it's for
For couples
The wild, unpolished atmosphere and fort ruins make Arrifana a genuinely romantic spot — walk the clifftop at dusk, watch the swell roll in, and eat at Terra Mar before the light fades.
For families
Swimming is rated safe, and the golden sand beach is wide enough for children to roam, but keep kids firmly away from the cliff edges and supervise closely at high tide when conditions change quickly.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Arrifana earns its reputation as one of the Algarve's wilder beaches, but come with your eyes open. The cliffs are genuinely unstable — keep your distance and take the safety signs seriously. That said, if you want surf, dramatic scenery, golden sand, and a beach that hasn't been smoothed into a resort, this delivers. It sits inside a protected natural reserve, which keeps the landscape intact and the atmosphere honest. The fort ruins, the basalt cliffs, the blue Atlantic rolling in — it's a strong combination. Go in June or September to avoid the peak summer rush and still catch reliable weather.
What to do
The headland at Ponta da Atalaia, 3.4km away, rewards a short drive or walk with sweeping coastal views. Monte Clérigo, another beach about 5.8km north, is worth a detour if you want to explore more of the Costa Vicentina. Back in Aljezur town, the Pelourinho — a historic stone pillory — marks the centre of a quiet, characterful village worth an hour of your time.
The clifftop viewpoint above the bay gives you the full arc of golden sand with basalt walls on either side — best at sunrise before anyone else arrives.
The fort ruins on the headland frame the blue Atlantic behind them and photograph well in late afternoon side-light.
Where to eat
Restaurante da Praia is the closest option, just 300 metres from the beach, and a logical stop after a morning in the water. A short walk further brings you to CAL Arrifana, Hokapia Arrifana, and Terra Mar, all within 500 metres. Sea You surf cafe, also 500 metres away, serves American and Mexican food and fits the relaxed post-surf mood of the place.
Where to stay
Utopia Hotel is the closest base, 1.7km from the beach and well-positioned for early morning access. Lago Silencioso, 3.1km out, offers a quieter rural alternative. If you want more space and seclusion, Quinta Das Andorinhas sits about 9.7km away in the surrounding countryside.
Photography
Shoot from the clifftop at golden hour — the basalt cliffs glow and the fort ruins silhouette dramatically against the blue Atlantic. Morning light is cleaner and softer; arrive before the day-trippers for uncluttered wide shots of the golden sand arc below.
Good to know
Stay well back from the cliff edges at all times — rockfalls and landslides are a real risk here, not a formality. Be cautious swimming at high tide, when wave energy increases and the beach narrows significantly. The beach sits inside a protected natural reserve, so treat the environment accordingly and take your rubbish with you. Summers bring plenty of visitors; arrive early to secure parking at the clifftop and claim your patch of sand.
