Burgau Beach
Golden cove, fishing soul, western Algarve at its quietest

About
Praia do Burgau sits along the western Algarve coast of Portugal, a compact sandy cove where golden sand meets turquoise Atlantic water. The village of Burgau — part of the Budens commune — wraps around the beach with the unhurried rhythm of a working fishing community. Whitewashed houses step down to the shoreline, and the pace here is deliberately slow. The relaxed, low-key vibe makes it feel a world apart from the busier resort strips further east. Best visited between June and September, when the temperate northern-hemisphere climate delivers warm, settled days.
How to get there
Praia do Burgau is reached by ferry — there is no road access to the beach itself, so leave any notion of driving there behind. Make your way to the embarkation point and take the ferry across to the cove. There is no parking on the beach side, as the access is entirely by water. Faro Airport (FAO) is the nearest international gateway, approximately 71.7 km away.
Who it's for
For couples
The relaxed, authentic fishing-village atmosphere makes Burgau genuinely romantic without trying to be — a ferry ride, golden sand, turquoise water, and a table at O Refúgio is a complete evening.
For families
The cove's sheltered shape and calm appearance appeal to families, though always verify swimming conditions locally before letting children enter the water — no lifeguard status is confirmed for this beach.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Burgau is the western Algarve without the performance — no beach bars pumping music, no jet-ski rentals, no queue for sunbeds. You arrive by ferry, you find golden sand and turquoise water, and the fishing village does the rest. The boat-only access is a genuine filter: it keeps the numbers down and the atmosphere intact. The food options right at the village edge — O Refúgio, A Prateleira, Caravela — are solid and close. Come between June and September for reliable weather, and come on a weekday if you want the cove closer to yourself. This is a beach that rewards patience and punishes anyone in a hurry.
What to do
The beach itself is the main event — golden sand, turquoise water, and the kind of stillness that invites you to simply sit and watch the fishing boats. Snorkelling around the rocky edges of the cove is worth exploring given the clear water. The surrounding western Algarve coastline rewards anyone who enjoys coastal walking and photography. The village of Burgau is small enough to wander in under an hour, and the fishing-village atmosphere is the real attraction.
Shoot from the upper village lanes looking down over the golden sand and turquoise water for the definitive Burgau composition.
The fishing boats pulled up on the sand make a strong foreground element, especially in the warm light of late afternoon.
Where to eat
Right at the water's edge you'll find O Refúgio serving regional Portuguese cooking, and A Prateleira Snack Bar for lighter bites — both within 0.1 km of the beach. MIAM and Pizzeria Corso are also within 0.1 km if you want something different, and Caravela is a short 0.2 km stroll away.
Where to stay
Hotel Praia do Burgau is the closest option, just 0.3 km from the beach, and a straightforward base for exploring the cove. Casa Brybeg offers an alternative at 2.4 km away, suitable if you prefer a quieter, more residential setting.
Photography
The golden hour before sunset turns the golden sand and turquoise water into a warm, painterly scene — shoot from the upper village looking down over the cove for the classic Burgau frame. Early morning, before the day-trippers arrive by ferry, gives you the cleanest light and an empty foreground of undisturbed sand.
Good to know
Travel light — everything you bring must come with you on the ferry and back again. The best months are June through September; outside that window the Atlantic weather can be unsettled. Because swimming safety data is not confirmed for this beach, exercise caution in the water and always check local conditions before entering — Atlantic coves can carry unexpected currents. This is a genuinely authentic fishing village, so respect the local community and keep noise low.
