Itaipu Beach
Golden sands, emerald water, and authentic fishing-village soul

About
Praia de Itaipu sits along the Brazilian Atlantic coast in Niterói's Região Oceânica, where golden sand meets emerald water in a setting that still feels genuinely local. The small Ilha da Menina punctuates the horizon, giving the bay a distinctive silhouette that sets it apart from Rio's more famous stretches. The vibe here is unhurried — fishing boats, neighbourhood regulars, and the smell of grilled seafood drifting from nearby bars. It's the kind of beach where time slows down without any effort on your part.
How to get there
You can reach Praia de Itaipu by car or bus from Niterói and the wider Região Oceânica area. Parking is available in a mix of street spots and private lots; private parking runs around R$ 20,00, with free street parking also possible if you arrive early. Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) is roughly 13.7 km away, making a taxi or rideshare a straightforward option from the city.
Who it's for
For couples
Itaipu's relaxed pace and authentic fishing-village character make it a low-key escape for couples who'd rather share a plate of fresh seafood at Bar do Paulinho than fight for a sun lounger on a famous beach.
For families
Swimming is rated safe here, and the calm, unhurried atmosphere suits families well — just keep younger children away from the canal area where jet skis can come uncomfortably close to bathers.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Praia de Itaipu is safe for swimming, and that's a good starting point. Beyond that, it earns its reputation as one of Niterói's more authentic spots — golden sand, emerald water, a fishing-village rhythm that hasn't been polished away for tourists. The jet ski situation in the canal area is a genuine irritant and a real safety concern, so pick your spot in the water carefully. The dry months from May to October are the sweet spot: comfortable weather, calmer seas, and the beach at its most enjoyable. It won't dazzle you with infrastructure or nightlife, but that's precisely the point. If you want a local beach that still feels like it belongs to the people who live there, Itaipu delivers.
What to do
The Mirante para Itacoatiara, just 0.5 km away, rewards a short walk with sweeping coastal views worth the effort. Casa de Pedra, at 0.8 km, combines a trail with diving opportunities for those who want to explore beyond the sand. Pedra do Choque, also 0.8 km out, adds another natural landmark to a half-day of easy exploration along this stretch of coast.
The shoreline at golden-hour delivers a clean shot of emerald water against golden sand with Ilha da Menina sitting quietly in the frame.
The Mirante para Itacoatiara, 0.5 km up the trail, gives you the elevated coastal panorama that puts the whole bay in perspective. Pedra do Choque at 0.8 km adds a dramatic rock-formation foreground for anyone willing to walk a little further.
Where to eat
Bar do Paulinho, just 0.3 km from the beach, is the obvious first stop for fresh seafood in a no-fuss setting. If you're after something different, Coni Camboinhas offers Japanese cuisine about 2.4 km away, while Gula Gula and Frangão na Brasa sit within 3.5 km for a broader range of options.
Where to stay
Hotel de Trânsito da Marinha is the closest option at 7.4 km, followed by Hotel Fagundes Varela at 10.5 km for a more standard stay. If you want to be closer to Rio's amenities, Windsor Hotel Leme and the Hilton Rio de Janeiro Copacabana are both within 13 km, bridging the gap between Itaipu's quiet atmosphere and the city's energy.
Photography
Shoot from the shoreline in the early morning when the emerald water catches the low light and the golden sand glows without harsh shadows. The Mirante para Itacoatiara at 0.5 km gives you an elevated angle over the bay and Ilha da Menina — that's your best wide-composition shot of the day.
Good to know
Jet skis operating too close to bathers in the canal area can be a real concern — stay alert and keep children well away from that zone. The dry season runs May through October, which is the most comfortable time to visit; November through April brings wetter, more unpredictable weather. Arrive before mid-morning on weekends to secure a good spot and beat the day-visitor influx. The beach has a relaxed, local atmosphere — match that energy and you'll fit right in.
