Canto BeachBrazil Beach Guide
Golden sand, flat turquoise water, zero tourist fuss

About
Praia de Canto stretches roughly 1,065 metres along a north-facing bay on Ilha do Coboclo, in the commune of Armação dos Búzios, Rio de Janeiro. The northern protected exposure keeps the water flat and calm, turning the turquoise surface into a near-perfect mirror on still mornings. Golden sand lines the shore, and the residential streets behind the beach give it a lived-in, unhurried feel that most visitors to Búzios never discover. No beach bars, no rental chairs, no touts — just local families, the occasional stand-up paddler, and the sound of the bay.
How to get there
From Armação dos Búzios centre the drive takes about 8 minutes, and the beach is reachable daily by car or by ferry. Informal street parking is available in the surrounding residential neighbourhood — there is no formal car park or fee. Access is easy, with flat terrain that may allow a limited wheelchair approach, though no formal accessibility infrastructure exists.
Who it's for
For couples
The quiet, residential atmosphere and mirror-flat turquoise water make Praia de Canto a genuinely low-key escape — no vendors interrupting conversation, just golden sand and a calm bay to yourselves.
For families
Safe swimming, easy access, flat terrain, and a dog-friendly shore mean families can settle in without stress; the lack of tourist infrastructure keeps things simple and the local vibe keeps it relaxed.
Our take
Swimming is safe and the water is genuinely calm — Praia de Canto earns its reputation as a place where you can actually relax in the water rather than fight it. At roughly 1,065 metres of golden sand with a north-facing protected exposure, it's a long, quiet stretch that most visitors to Búzios drive straight past. There's no tourist infrastructure here at all, which is either the point or a dealbreaker depending on what you're after. Bring everything you need, respect the neighbourhood, and you'll have one of the calmest bays on this stretch of the Rio de Janeiro coast largely to yourself. Worth the 8-minute drive from the centre.
What to do
Flat, calm water makes Praia de Canto one of the better spots around Búzios for stand-up paddling — bring or rent a board before you arrive, since there's no infrastructure on site. A short walk or drive takes you to the Mirante da Praia dos Amores (0.7 km) and the Mirante da Tartaruga (0.9 km), both offering elevated views over the coastline. Praia das Virgens is just 1 km away if you want to explore another stretch of sand, and the Orla Bardot promenade — with its famous Brigitte Bardot bronze statue — is 1.5 km from the beach.
The waterline at dawn delivers the cleanest shot — golden sand in the foreground, flat turquoise water stretching to the horizon, with no infrastructure to crop out.
The residential backstreet approach, with its low fences and local character, offers a candid street-meets-sea frame that reads nothing like the typical Búzios postcard. For wider context, the Mirante da Tartaruga just 0.9 km away gives an elevated look back over the bay.
Where to eat
There's nothing to eat or drink on the beach itself, so plan ahead. A cluster of options sits about 0.3 km away: Noi, Bananaland (regional cooking), Las Brasas Churrasqueria, BemBem Pizzas, and Pátio Michou (crepes and burgers) all sit within easy walking distance. Pack a cooler if you want to stay on the sand all day.
Where to stay
Hotel Liberdade is the closest option at 1.1 km, followed by Bella Vista Paradiso Hostel at 1.2 km. Pousada ao Por do Sol (1.3 km), Azeda Boutique Hotel (1.6 km), and Hotel Pousada Bugaloo (1.6 km) are also nearby.
Photography
Shoot early morning when the flat, turquoise water reflects the sky and the golden sand is still empty of footprints — the north-facing aspect means soft, even light rather than harsh backlight. The contrast between the calm bay and the low residential rooflines makes for an honest, unposed frame that stands apart from Búzios' more postcard-famous spots.
Good to know
This is a residential neighbourhood, so keep noise low and treat the streets and shore with the same respect you'd show someone's front yard. There are no facilities on the beach itself, so bring water, sunscreen, and anything else you need. The dry season from May to October delivers the most reliably calm, clear conditions — the wet season runs November through April and can bring overcast skies and choppy spells. Dogs are welcome, and local families bring them regularly.
