Ejido Beach
Golden sands, a castle view, and the Costa del Sol buzz

About
Playa del Ejido stretches roughly 600 metres along Fuengirola's coastline, its golden sand meeting blue Mediterranean water in one of the Costa del Sol's most accessible urban beach settings. The silhouette of Sohail Castle — a Moorish fortress dating to AD 956 — rises just half a kilometre away, giving the shoreline a backdrop you won't find at most city beaches. It's lively here: families stake out their patches early, and the energy stays high through the afternoon. The nearby marina adds a nautical hum to the scene, with boats coming and going just a short walk along the promenade. Safe swimming conditions and easy access make it a reliable choice rather than a secret one.
How to get there
From Fuengirola town centre, it's a straightforward 10-minute walk to the beach — no car needed if you're already in town. Driving from Fuengirola takes around 5 minutes. Parking is the one friction point: there's limited free parking at the beach entrance, street parking nearby gets challenging in peak season, and your most reliable paid option is Parking Paseo Marítimo. No entry fee for the beach itself.
Who it's for
For couples
An evening walk from the beach to Puerto de Fuengirola marina — with Sohail Castle lit up behind you — makes for a genuinely atmospheric date without needing a car. Come in June or September when the pace is easier and you can actually hear each other.
For families
Safe swimming, easy beach access, and Bioparc Fuengirola just 3 km away make this a practical family base for a full day out. The flat promenade is pushchair-friendly, and the castle is close enough for a short detour that keeps older kids interested.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Playa del Ejido doesn't pretend to be undiscovered — it's an urban beach in a busy coastal city, and it owns that identity well. Swimming is safe, the golden sand is well-maintained, and having a genuine medieval castle half a kilometre away is an advantage most city beaches can't claim. August will test your patience; June and September give you the warmth without the peak-season squeeze. The marina and Bioparc mean you're never short of a plan B when the beach feels too packed. It's not the Costa del Sol's most dramatic stretch of coastline, but it's one of its most functional — and the castle view at golden hour is hard to argue with.
What to do
Sohail Castle is the unmissable stop — just 0.5 km from the sand, this renovated Moorish fortress hosts concerts and cultural events and delivers panoramic views over the coast. Puerto de Fuengirola marina, about 2 km along the seafront, offers boat excursions and waterfront bars worth an evening stroll. If you're travelling with kids or nature lovers, Bioparc Fuengirola is only 3 km away — a zoo focused on endangered species breeding and tropical forest education.
Frame Sohail Castle from the waterline at the northern end of the beach — the medieval stonework against blue water is the defining shot of this stretch.
The marina at Puerto de Fuengirola, 2 km along the promenade, offers colourful boat reflections best captured in the early morning calm. For a wider scene, shoot back along the golden sand from the castle end just after sunrise before the beach fills.
Where to eat
For a serious meal, Venta Restaurante La Butibamba — about 5.7 km from the beach — is one of the most-reviewed options in the area and consistently well-regarded. Restaurante El Higuerón, around 7.4 km away, is another strong choice with a loyal following. If you're willing to travel a little further, La Cala at 10.2 km rounds out the options with solid ratings and a large number of reviews behind it.
Where to stay
Hotel IPV Palace & Spa sits just 0.4 km from the beach — as close as it gets — and carries a 4.5-star rating across nearly 4,000 reviews, making it the obvious pick for convenience. Further afield, Higueron Hotel Malaga, Curio Collection by Hilton (6.9 km) is the area's top-rated stay at 4.6 stars, worth the short drive if you want a step up in luxury.
Photography
The best shot on this beach is the one framing Sohail Castle against the blue sea — position yourself at the northern end of the beach at golden hour when the light hits the fortress walls. Early morning also works well: the golden sand is uncluttered and the water catches the low sun cleanly before the day fills up.
Good to know
Come before mid-morning in July and September to claim a good spot — this beach gets packed fast and August is the worst of it, so consider skipping that month entirely if you dislike tight quarters. Swimming is safe, but stay aware of boat traffic given the marina proximity. If you're working remotely or want a coffee break, Café NOMAD is just 0.7 km away. Pack sunscreen and water; the urban setting means vendors, but preparation beats queuing.
