Alexis Beach
Golden sands, Moorish castle views, Costa del Sol energy

About
Playa Alexis stretches roughly 600 metres along the Fuengirola seafront, its golden sand meeting blue Mediterranean water in a setting that's equal parts relaxed and lively. The promenade runs right alongside, so you can move seamlessly from sunbed to café terrace without losing sight of the sea. Castillo Sohail rises on the headland nearby, giving the beach a dramatic historic backdrop that sets it apart from its neighbours. It's a family-friendly Blue Flag beach — safe swimming, easy access, and the kind of reliable Andalusian sunshine that makes planning simple. Expect company: this is a popular stretch, and it shows.
How to get there
Playa Alexis sits in Fuengirola, roughly five minutes by car from the town centre or a five-minute walk along the promenade — whichever suits you. Málaga Airport (AGP) is about 19.8 km away, making it an easy first-day stop after landing. Parking is available via paid public spaces along the Paseo Marítimo and nearby underground garages — no free spots, so carry change or a card. There's no entry fee for the beach itself.
Who it's for
For couples
The promenade walk at dusk, with Castillo Sohail lit on the headland and the blue water catching the last light, gives couples a genuinely scenic evening without needing a car. June and September offer the warmth without the August intensity.
For families
Blue Flag water quality, safe swimming, and easy promenade access make Playa Alexis a low-stress family beach — you're not navigating cliff paths or hunting for shade. Bioparc Fuengirola is 2.5 km away and a natural add-on for a full family day.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Playa Alexis is a well-run, genuinely enjoyable Costa del Sol beach that delivers exactly what it promises: golden sand, blue water, safe swimming, and a lively promenade atmosphere. The Blue Flag status isn't just a logo — it reflects consistent water quality and good facilities. The proximity to Castillo Sohail gives it a character that pure resort beaches lack. That said, be honest with yourself about August: this beach is busy by nature, and peak summer pushes it into a different category. Hit it in June or September and it's close to ideal. Skip the high-season chaos and you'll leave happy.
What to do
Castillo Sohail, a Moorish fortress just 1.5 km from the beach, is worth the short walk — panoramic views over the coast and a programme of concerts and festivals make it more than a ruin to photograph. Bioparc Fuengirola, 2.5 km away, is a modern zoo built around immersive habitats for endangered species and a solid half-day out for any age. If you're willing to travel a little further, the Stupa of Enlightenment in Benalmádena (7.1 km) and the Monowa Butterfly Park (7.2 km) both rate 4.6 out of 5 and make a rewarding afternoon inland.
The view along the promenade with Castillo Sohail in the background is the standout frame — shoot it from beach level in the late afternoon when the golden sand catches warm light.
The waterline at sunrise offers a quieter, cleaner shot of the blue Mediterranean before the day gets going. The castle itself, 1.5 km from the beach, gives elevated panoramic angles over the whole coastline.
Where to eat
Venta Restaurante La Butibamba, rated 4.4 out of 5 by over 8,700 reviewers, is the closest strong option at 6.6 km — worth the short drive for a proper Andalusian meal. La Cala (4.4/5, 9.2 km) is another reliable choice if you're heading along the coast. For a bigger scene, Puerto Marina in Benalmádena (12.2 km) combines waterfront dining with one of the highest review counts on the coast.
Where to stay
Hotel IPV Palace & Spa is the closest listed hotel at just 1.5 km from the beach, rated 4.5 out of 5 by nearly 4,000 guests — a convenient base if you want to walk to the water. For something with more resort scale, Higueron Hotel Malaga, Curio Collection by Hilton (5.7 km, 4.6/5) is the highest-rated option in the area and worth considering if you want a step up in comfort.
Photography
Shoot from the promenade at golden hour looking west toward Castillo Sohail — the fortress silhouette against the warm sky over blue water is the defining image of this beach. Early morning gives you the golden sand without the daytime visitors, and the low light picks up the texture of the shoreline beautifully.
Good to know
Come in June or early July to enjoy the best weather before August turns the beach seriously packed — the promenade fills fast and space on the sand gets tight. Swimming is safe here, and the Blue Flag status means water quality is monitored regularly, so you can get in without hesitation. If you're working remotely, Café NOMAD is just 0.5 km away and is the nearest laptop-friendly option. Avoid August if you prefer breathing room.
