Las Aguas Beach
Golden sands, scenic cliffs, and blissful quiet on Tenerife's north coast

About
Playa de Las Aguas stretches roughly 200 metres along the northern coast of Tenerife, tucked within the commune of La Vera in Santa Úrsula. Golden sand meets blue water here, framed by dramatic scenic cliffs that give the beach its raw, unhurried character. It's a quiet spot — facilities are limited, so you arrive prepared or you do without. Hiking trails connect the beach to the surrounding coastal landscape, making it more than just a place to lay a towel. The vibe is relaxed, the pace slow, and the setting genuinely striking.
How to get there
You can reach Playa de Las Aguas by car from San Juan de la Rambla in around 10 minutes — a straightforward daily route. Bus connections run from Santa Cruz, taking approximately 45 minutes. Free street and lot parking is available near the beach, though spaces are limited, so arrive early during peak months. There is no entry fee.
Who it's for
For couples
The quiet setting and dramatic cliff scenery make this a genuinely peaceful escape for two — no large groups, no beach bars, just golden sand and blue water with room to breathe.
For families
The safe swimming conditions and easy access make Playa de Las Aguas manageable with children, though the limited facilities mean you'll need to bring everything you need for the day.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Playa de Las Aguas is not trying to impress you with amenities — it doesn't have many. What it offers instead is 200 metres of golden sand, blue water, towering cliffs, and genuine quiet. Swimming is safe between February and November; skip the water entirely in December and January when winter swells roll in. The hiking access elevates this beyond a standard beach stop, and the nearby natural pools at Charco De La Laja make a logical half-day pairing. Come self-sufficient, come early for parking, and come outside the winter months. Worth the detour.
What to do
Just 1.3 kilometres away, Charco De La Laja is a highly rated natural spot worth combining with your visit. Charco del Viento, another coastal gem, sits 3.5 kilometres along the shore. For a bigger day out, Teide National Park's volcanic landscape and hiking trails are around 55 kilometres away, and the historic town of Garachico — with its famous natural pools — is a 15-kilometre drive along the coast.
The base of the scenic cliffs at the beach edges gives you a dramatic natural frame with golden sand in the foreground and blue water behind.
The elevated cliff-top hiking trail above the beach delivers wide coastal shots that are hard to replicate from sea level. Early morning light on the shoreline, before other visitors arrive, produces clean, uncluttered frames.
Where to eat
The nearest dining options require a short drive. Mesón El Monasterio, about 7.7 kilometres away, is a well-regarded local choice with thousands of reviews behind it. Mesón Los Gemelos and Restaurante el Camino are both within 10 kilometres and consistently well-rated — worth booking ahead if you're planning an evening meal after a day at the beach.
Where to stay
Hotel Puerto Palace and Alua Tenerife are both within 9 kilometres and offer solid bases for exploring this stretch of the north coast. Hotel Las Águilas Tenerife, Affiliated by Meliá, sits about 9 kilometres away and carries strong guest ratings. None of these are beachfront, but the short drive to Playa de Las Aguas makes them practical choices.
Photography
The scenic cliffs framing the golden sand photograph best in the soft light of early morning, when shadows are long and the blue water catches the sun cleanly. For wider coastal compositions, the cliff-top hiking paths above the beach offer elevated angles that take in the full sweep of the shoreline.
Good to know
Facilities are sparse, so pack water, food, and sun protection before you head down. Swimming is considered safe here, but avoid the beach in December and January when winter swells make conditions unpredictable — stay out of the water during those months. The hiking access is a genuine draw, but wear proper footwear on the cliff paths. Arrive early to secure one of the limited parking spaces, especially between June and September.
