Passable BeachFrance Beach Guide
Cap Ferrat's rare free beach with turquoise calm water

About
Plage de Passable sits on the western flank of Cap Ferrat, one of the most exclusive peninsulas on the Côte d'Azur, and it offers something genuinely rare here: free public access. The beach is a pleasing mix of golden sand and shingle, sheltered inside a calm bay where the turquoise water barely stirs — ideal for a lazy morning swim. A backdrop of pine forest keeps things cool and fragrant, while across the water the colourful facades of Villefranche-sur-Mer complete the view. The vibe is relaxed and local, a world away from the ticketed beach clubs that dominate this stretch of coast.
How to get there
From Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat village, it's a 5-minute drive or a pleasant 20-minute walk. Bus Line 15 from the village runs every 15 minutes or so and drops you close by — the easiest option in summer. If you drive, a small paid parking lot is available on-site; payment can be made via the Flowbird app. Parking is paid from 1 May to 30 September, the lot is small, and in July and August it fills by 9 in the morning, so walking or cycling from the village is strongly advised.
Who it's for
For couples
The sheltered bay, pine shade, and sweeping view across to Villefranche make this a quietly romantic spot — pack a picnic, arrive early, and you'll likely have a corner of golden sand almost to yourselves.
For families
The calm, sheltered water and moderate swimming conditions suit families with children who can swim, though the mixed sand-and-shingle underfoot means water shoes are a good idea; note there are no lifeguards on duty, so supervision is entirely on you.
Our take
Plage de Passable is one of the very few places on Cap Ferrat where you can simply show up and swim for free — that alone makes it worth knowing about. The water is genuinely calm and turquoise, the pine backdrop keeps the heat bearable, and the view across to Villefranche is as good as anything you'll find on this coast. That said, go in clear-eyed: there are no lifeguards, water quality should be checked before you swim, and the parking situation in July and August is genuinely hopeless. Come in June or September, walk down from the village, and you'll find one of the Côte d'Azur's most relaxed and accessible public beaches. Skip it in August unless you enjoy a long walk from wherever you eventually park.
What to do
The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, a palatial Belle Époque villa with nine themed gardens overlooking both bays of Cap Ferrat, is just 1.2 km away and well worth a dedicated visit. For another beach fix, Plage de Paloma — a renowned clear-water cove on the eastern tip of the cape — is 2.5 km away. Round out the day with a stroll into Villefranche-sur-Mer, about 3 km distant, where the medieval harbour and the Cocteau-decorated Chapelle Saint-Pierre reward the curious.
Stand at the water's edge and shoot back toward the pine forest with the turquoise bay in the foreground — the contrast of golden sand, green pines, and clear water is the defining frame of Passable.
For a wider composition, look for vantage points along the path approaching the beach that frame the entire sheltered bay with the Villefranche panorama stretching across the horizon.
Where to eat
The restaurant Passable is right on the beach, so you never have to go far for lunch. A short walk of around 0.7 km brings you to La Frégate and Nonna, the latter serving a broad Mediterranean menu spanning regional dishes, pizza, fish, and burgers. Le Saint-Jean and Madamepizza are both within 0.8 km if you want to explore the village after a swim.
Where to stay
Hôtel & Spa La Villa Cap Ferrat, just 0.5 km away, is the closest option for those who want to roll out of bed and onto the beach. La Frégate at 0.7 km and Hôtel Delcloy at 0.9 km are solid choices within easy walking distance. For something with a touch more prestige, La Voile d'Or at 1.1 km and Brise Marine at 1.3 km are both well-placed on the cape.
Photography
The best shot is from the waterline at golden hour, framing the pine forest backdrop against the turquoise bay with the Villefranche panorama glowing in the distance. Early morning, before the daytrippers arrive, gives you clean reflections on the calm water and golden sand without figures cluttering the foreground.
Good to know
No lifeguards patrol this beach, so swim within your limits and keep an eye on children at all times. Water quality can vary — check baignades.sante.gouv.fr for the current status before you get in. Dogs are prohibited on the beach in season, and camping is not permitted anywhere on site. July and August bring the most visitors and make parking essentially impossible; June or September give you the same turquoise water with far fewer people around.
