About

Plage de la Garoupe sits on the eastern flank of Cap d'Antibes, a compact stretch of white sand roughly 72 metres long where the water holds a clear turquoise colour even on overcast days. The beach faces east, so it catches the morning light and stays sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds — a combination that keeps the surface glassy and ideal for peering through to the sandy bottom. Behind the shore, a pine-wooded headland rises toward a lighthouse on the ridge above, giving the whole scene a postcard backdrop that feels genuinely earned. The beach splits into a public zone and private concession areas, so the character shifts depending on where you plant your towel. It's relaxed in pace, family-friendly in feel, and one of the more swimmable spots along this stretch of the Côte d'Azur.

How to get there

From Antibes centre, the beach is about 15 minutes by car or by Envibus Line 2, which runs hourly and daily in summer. The coastal path from Cap d'Antibes is a 30-minute walk and a rewarding approach if you want to arrive on foot. Free public parking is available nearby, but in July and August it fills by 10h — arrive early or take the bus. Private beach clubs offer parking for their guests, but the public zones have no entry fee.

Who it's for

For couples

The sheltered, east-facing bay means calm mornings with turquoise water and pine shade — arrive early in June or September and you'll have long stretches of white sand almost to yourselves before the day gets going.

For families

Safe swimming, easy access by bus from Antibes centre, and calm snorkeling water make this a practical and genuinely enjoyable family beach — just remember dogs are not permitted in season and ball games are prohibited, so pack snorkeling masks rather than a football.

Our take

Swimming is safe and the water is genuinely turquoise — that's not marketing copy, it's what you'll find on a calm June morning. At just 72 metres long, Garoupe is a small beach with a big reputation, and in July and August the private concessions claim most of it, leaving a narrow free strip that disappears fast. Come in June or September and the balance tips back in your favour: white sand, calm snorkeling water, pine shade, and a lighthouse watching over the whole scene. The bus from Antibes centre takes 15 minutes and saves the parking headache entirely. Skip the peak of summer unless you're booking a concession sunbed or arriving before 10h. For everyone else, this is one of the most swimmable, sheltered, and visually satisfying beaches on the Cap — just keep it honest about the size.— The wmb team

What to do

A 1.5 km walk brings you to Villa Eilenroc, a Belle Époque villa with gardens open to the public on the tip of Cap d'Antibes — a lovely half-day addition to a beach morning. Jazz fans will find the Walk of Fame dedicated to jazz musicians about 2.2 km away, while the Musée Picasso Antibes, housed in the Château Grimaldi in the old town, is around 4 km from the beach. If you have more time, the Îles de Lérins — a protected island group with a medieval monastery — are reachable by ferry from Antibes, roughly 8 km offshore.

Instagram spots

Shoot from the waterline looking back at the pine-wooded headland with the lighthouse ridge visible above — the white sand and turquoise water in the foreground do the heavy lifting.

The boundary where the public sand meets the colourful concession parasols makes a graphic, layered composition that captures the split personality of Garoupe honestly.

Where to eat

Right at the beach, Le César and La Joelette are the closest options, while Le Rocher is just 0.1 km away for a short stroll. For a more special occasion, Restaurant Bacon is 1.7 km along the cape, and the Eden-Roc at 1.6 km offers a grander setting if the mood calls for it.

Where to stay

Castel Garoupe Axa is the closest base at just 0.3 km, making early-morning beach runs genuinely easy. The Cap d'Antibes Beach Hotel at 1.6 km and La Jabotte at 1.8 km offer good alternatives at slightly more distance, while Hôtel Josse at 2.2 km is a further option for those who prefer to be a little closer to the wider area.

Photography

The best light hits the white sand and turquoise water in the first two hours after sunrise, when the east-facing aspect means the beach is fully lit and largely empty. Frame the lighthouse on the ridge above the pine-wooded headland from the waterline for a layered shot that captures everything distinctive about Garoupe in a single frame.

Good to know

Dogs are prohibited on Antibes beaches from June through September, so leave them at home during peak season. No camping is permitted anywhere on the beach. Private concession sunbeds occupy most of the sand in July and August — if you want a free spot, get there before 10h or consider visiting in June or September instead. Ball games are prohibited, and the public free zone shrinks considerably in high summer, so manage expectations if you're arriving mid-afternoon in peak weeks.
