Odayam BeachIndia Beach Guide
Authentic fishing shore, walkable from Varkala's famous cliff

About
Odayam Beach stretches roughly 881 metres along the Kerala coast near Varkala, a quiet strip of mixed sand backed by striking laterite rock outcrops that glow rust-red in the afternoon light. The water rolls in steadily here, and the shore belongs far more to working fishermen than to tourists — you'll watch boats launch directly from the beach as part of daily life. There's no tourist infrastructure to speak of: no sunbed rows, no beach shacks, no touts. What you get instead is the real texture of a Kerala fishing community, with nets spread across the sand and the smell of salt and diesel in the air. It's walkable from Varkala Cliff in about 35 minutes, which makes it one of the most accessible 'off the beaten path' stretches on this coastline.
How to get there
You can reach Odayam Beach by car from Varkala town in around 15 minutes, or hop in an auto-rickshaw from Varkala Cliff or the Railway Station — the ride takes about 12 minutes. The public bus from Varkala Bus Stand covers the route in roughly 25 minutes. If you prefer to walk, the hike from Varkala Cliff Beach takes about 35 minutes along the coast and is doable daily. Limited roadside parking is available and may cost between ₹20 and ₹50; spaces fill up, so arriving early helps.
Who it's for
For couples
Odayam's quiet atmosphere and the 35-minute cliff walk from Varkala make it a genuinely low-key escape — stroll the mixed sand shore, watch the sunset from the viewpoint 0.8 km away, and enjoy the absence of tourist noise.
For families
The easy access by auto-rickshaw or car and the calm, observational nature of the beach — watching boats launch, exploring laterite outcrops — give curious children plenty to engage with, though parents should keep young ones well clear of the active boat launch zones and the unguarded water.
Our take
No lifeguard, active fishing boat traffic in the water, and zero tourist infrastructure — Odayam demands respect before it rewards you. That said, if you approach it on its own terms, this is one of the most authentic stretches of Kerala coast within easy reach of Varkala. The laterite geology is genuinely striking, the fishing community goes about its work without performing for visitors, and the 35-minute cliff walk from Varkala is a pleasure in the dry season. Come between November and April, stay out of the water unless you're confident about the conditions and the boat traffic, and give the boat launches a wide berth. Skip it entirely in June, July, and August. For photographers and anyone tired of the Varkala Cliff tourist circuit, it's worth the short detour.
What to do
The Odayam Beach cliff viewpoint, about 0.9 km away, offers a dramatic perspective over the laterite coastline and is worth the short walk. The Sundown viewpoint at 0.8 km is the obvious choice for watching the sun go down — arrive early to claim a good spot. From here it's only 2 km to Varkala Cliff Beach, one of Kerala's most iconic stretches of coast and a Hindu pilgrimage site, and a further 2.5 km to the ancient Janardhana Swami Temple perched on the cliff edge. The Sivagiri Mutt ashram, a major pilgrimage centre associated with Sree Narayana Guru, lies about 5 km away and is well worth the short trip.
The rust-red laterite rock outcrops against the blue sea are the beach's most distinctive visual — shoot them at golden hour for maximum contrast.
The working fishing boats launching from the mixed sand shore make for compelling, candid documentary frames at dawn. The Odayam Beach cliff at 0.9 km gives an elevated view of the entire coastline that works well in wide-angle shots.
Where to eat
Blue Water is the closest dining option, just 0.1 km from the beach, while Maadathil Cottages at 0.5 km offers a more relaxed setting. Jairam Cafe, serving Indian and multicuisine food, is about 0.8 km away and a solid choice for a filling meal after a morning on the sand. Palm Tree Heritage and Babu's Farm are also in the immediate vicinity if you want to explore a couple of options before settling in.
Where to stay
Bluewater Beach Resort sits just 0.1 km from the beach, making it the most convenient base. Budget travellers will appreciate Zostel Varkala at 0.6 km and Soul Hostels Varkala at 0.7 km, both well-placed for exploring the wider Varkala area. Black Beach Resort and Krishnatheeram Ayur Holy Beach Resort are both around 0.8 km away, with the latter offering an Ayurvedic angle for those after a more restorative stay.
Photography
The laterite rock outcrops along the beach photograph beautifully in the golden hour before sunset, their rust-red faces contrasting sharply with the blue water. For the most atmospheric shots, come at dawn when the fishing boats are launching and the mixed sand shore is largely empty of visitors.
Good to know
There is no lifeguard on duty at Odayam — swim with genuine caution and be aware that fishing boats move through the water close to shore, making the nearshore zone genuinely hazardous. Respect the active fishing operations at all times: do not stand in the path of boat launches or handle equipment and nets on the sand. The beach is best visited between November and April during the dry season; avoid June, July, and August when the southwest monsoon brings rough seas and fishing activity is largely suspended. Sandy beach with no formal access infrastructure means the terrain can be uneven — wear appropriate footwear if you plan to explore the laterite outcrops.
