Benaulim Beach
White sand, turquoise water, and genuine fishing-village calm

About
Benaulim Beach sits on Goa's southern coast, where the white sand stretches wide and the Arabian Sea rolls in as turquoise as a postcard promises. The pace here is slow by design — fishing boats are pulled up on the shore, nets dry in the morning sun, and the village behind the dunes has barely changed in decades. It's South Goa at its most unhurried: no jet-ski touts, no thumping beach clubs, just the sound of waves and the occasional call of a fisherman. Swimming is considered safe in normal conditions, making it a genuine retreat for those who want the sea without the circus.
How to get there
The closest major hub is Goa International Airport (Dabolim), about 30 minutes away by taxi or a short flight connection. From Madgaon Railway Station you can reach the beach in 15 minutes by taxi or auto-rickshaw, and Margao Bus Terminal is roughly 20 minutes by bus. Both free and paid parking options are available near the beach, so arriving by rental car or rental bike — both bookable from anywhere in Goa — is perfectly practical.
Who it's for
For couples
Benaulim's relaxed, no-water-sports vibe makes it ideal for couples who want long, uninterrupted walks on white sand with turquoise water as the backdrop — no noise, no hustle, just each other and the Arabian Sea.
For families
Safe swimming conditions in the dry season (November–April), flat sandy entry into the water, and several family-friendly restaurants within 200 metres make Benaulim a low-stress beach day for families with younger children — just keep a close eye on flags and tides.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Benaulim is the beach you come to when you're done performing beach holidays. There are no water sports, no DJ sets, and no queue for a sun lounger — just white sand, turquoise water, and a fishing village that gets on with its own life. Swimming is safe in the dry season between November and April, which is also when the weather is at its best; the monsoon months bring strong currents and rough conditions, so plan accordingly. The food options right on the beach are genuine and unfussy, and the proximity to heritage sites like DSouza Mansion means you can fill a full day without trying hard. If you need to stay connected, White Crab café is 1.8 km away and laptop-friendly. This is South Goa doing what it does best: quietly, confidently, without needing to impress you.
What to do
The beach itself is the main event, but a short trip inland brings you to DSouza Mansion, a heritage property about 3.3 km away that offers a glimpse into Goa's colonial past. Monte Hill Viewpoint, roughly 5.6 km from the beach, rewards the journey with sweeping views over the coastline and surrounding landscape. The Wayside Cross at the same distance is a quiet, atmospheric landmark typical of South Goa's Portuguese-influenced heritage — worth a slow afternoon detour.
The line of colourful wooden fishing boats resting on the white sand at sunrise is Benaulim's most distinctive shot — arrive early before the light gets harsh.
Monte Hill Viewpoint, 5.6 km away, offers an elevated perspective of the coastline that puts the turquoise water and surrounding greenery into a single wide frame.
Where to eat
Right at the beach's edge, Ocean Heaven, Rex's Place (known for noodles and Indian dishes), and Sea Food Corner all sit within 100 metres, so you won't go hungry after a swim. A short 200-metre walk brings you to Hawaii Garden and Johnny Fisher, both solid options for a longer, more relaxed meal. The seafood here is as fresh as you'd expect from a working fishing village.
Where to stay
The Fern Beira Mar Resort is the closest option at 0.5 km, followed by Lotus Beach Resort at 0.6 km — both keep you within easy walking distance of the sand. For something more upscale, Taj Exotica at 0.9 km is one of Goa's most recognised resort names, while La Grace Resort and Carina Beach Resort at the same distance offer quieter mid-range alternatives.
Photography
Shoot at sunrise when the white sand is empty and the turquoise water catches the first light — the fishing boats pulled up on the shore make a compelling foreground. Late afternoon is equally rewarding: the warm golden hour light hits the sea at a low angle, and the silhouettes of fishermen working their nets give the frame real character.
Good to know
Always swim between the red and yellow flags, and get out of the water the moment red flags are displayed — no exceptions. Avoid swimming after sunset, never swim alone, and stay out of the water if you've been drinking. During monsoon season (May–October) and at high tide, strong currents can develop quickly even close to shore, so treat those months as a time to admire the sea from the sand rather than enter it. Benaulim is a working fishing village, so respect the boats and nets on the beach and keep noise levels low.
