Ios's quiet east coast: golden sand, fishing boats, real life

About
sits on the rarely visited east coast of Ios, sheltered from the island's notorious meltemi winds by the hills behind it. The result is calm, crystal-clear water lapping a stretch of golden sand — a sharp contrast to the party beaches on the other side of the island. A working fishing harbour anchors the scene, giving the place an authentic, unhurried atmosphere you won't find near Chora. It's the only east-coast settlement on Ios, which means you'll share it with locals far more than with tourists. The vibe is relaxed, the pace is slow, and that's exactly the point.
How to get there
From Ios Chora, you can drive to in about 25 minutes, and free parking is available on arrival — no apps, no ticket machines. A once-daily bus also runs from Chora (around 29 minutes), and two bus itineraries per day connect from Ios Port (around 30 minutes) — check local schedules as times shift seasonally. There is no entry fee.
Who it's for
For couples
is a genuinely quiet escape for couples who want calm water, golden sand, and a fishing harbour to wander without the noise of the island's busier beaches — an easy half-day away from everything.
For families
The sheltered, calm water makes more manageable for families than Ios's exposed beaches, but note that the water deepens quickly from the shore and the entry rocks are slippery — supervise children closely near the waterline.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
is the anti-Ios — no DJ sets, no beach bars, no queue for a sunlounger. What you get instead is a working fishing harbour, golden sand, and water calm enough to actually float in peace. Two safety points deserve your full attention before you wade in: the entry rocks are slippery, and the depth increases fast, so go carefully. The once-daily bus from Chora is a real constraint — miss it and you're driving or calling a taxi. If you have a car, the 25-minute drive from Chora is straightforward and the free parking removes any friction. For anyone who wants to see how Ios actually lives when it's not performing for tourists, this is the place.
What to do
A short 2km along the east coast brings you to Diakoftis Beach, a double-pocket cove with coarse sand and the ruins of a collapsed stone farmstead wall — worth the detour for the solitude alone. Back toward Chora, the Canon viewpoint at 2.2km and the Kalamos valley view at 3.8km reward anyone willing to pull over. If you make it all the way to Ios Chora (10km), the whitewashed hilltop capital with its windmills and the nearby Skarkos Early Bronze Age settlement fill a solid half-day.
Frame the colourful fishing boats against the crystal-clear water from the harbour edge — morning light keeps the scene sharp and reflection-free.
The golden sand stretching away from the harbour with the east-coast hills as backdrop works best in the hour after sunrise before any haze builds.
Where to eat
The nearest dining options are back toward Chora, roughly 6.3–6.5km away. Karma serves Italian, Almyra and Elpis Taverna both do Greek, and Cantina del Mar covers Greek, burgers, brunch, and sandwiches if you want something casual. Salt rounds out the options at 6.4km. Bring a packed lunch if you plan to stay all day — there's nothing confirmed on the beach itself.
Where to stay
Accommodation is clustered near Chora and Mylopotas, starting around 6.3km from the beach. Manthos Place is the closest option, with Far Out, Galaxy Hotel, Ios Plage, and Ios Palace all within 6.6km. None are within walking distance of, so you'll need a car or the bus to get back each evening.
Photography
Shoot the fishing harbour at golden hour when the boats catch the warm light and the hills behind glow amber — the crystal-clear water reflects the scene cleanly in calm morning conditions. For a wider east-coast perspective, the Canon viewpoint 2.2km away frames the bay and the golden sand below against the open Aegean.
Good to know
Watch your step entering the water — rocks near the shoreline are slippery and can catch you off guard. The water also gets deep quickly once you're in, so keep an eye on younger or less confident swimmers. No formal restrictions apply to dogs in this quiet local area, but respect the fishing community and keep things tidy. Come early or late in the day; the single daily bus means timing your visit matters if you're relying on public transport.
