Agios Ioannis Beach
Golden sands, Delos views, and pure Mykonian romance

About
Agios Ioannis Beach sits on Mykonos's west coast, where golden sand meets open blue water and the sacred island of Delos floats on the horizon like a mirage. The setting is unhurried — this is the relaxed, romantic side of Mykonos that the party reputation tends to overshadow. Sunsets here are the real draw: the western exposure means the sky turns spectacular as the day winds down, with Delos silhouetted against the light. The beach earned a cult following after featuring in the film Shirley Valentine, and that slow, dreamy energy hasn't entirely left. It's a west-coast gem for anyone who wants beauty without the chaos.
How to get there
From Mykonos Town (Fabrika), a bus runs to Agios Ioannis regularly — about 15 minutes, with more frequent service in high season. By car it's a 10-minute drive, and a taxi from town takes roughly 5 minutes. You can also walk from Ornos Beach if you prefer to arrive on foot. Free parking is available nearby, but spaces fill up fast during peak season — arrive early or take the bus to avoid the hunt.
Who it's for
For couples
The romantic vibe is built into the place — a Shirley Valentine sunset, Delos on the horizon, and blue water lapping at golden sand make this one of Mykonos's most genuinely intimate spots for two.
For families
Safe swimming and a relaxed pace make Agios Ioannis a low-stress choice for families; the free parking nearby and the short bus ride from Fabrika keep logistics simple, and the calm atmosphere means kids can actually be heard.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Agios Ioannis is the antidote to the Mykonos you've been warned about. Swimming is safe, the pace is slow, and the sunset over Delos is one of those views that earns its reputation without any marketing help. It's not the longest or most dramatic beach on the island, but the west-coast position and romantic atmosphere make it punch well above its size. Go in June or September if you want the golden sand and blue water without fighting for a spot. The bus from Fabrika is genuinely the smarter arrival — free parking exists but disappears fast in July and August. Stay for the full sunset. That's the whole point.
What to do
The iconic Melpo Axioti Statue is about 3km away and worth a short detour for context on Mykonos's cultural side. Little Venice, one of the island's most photographed neighbourhoods, is also around 3km from the beach and pairs perfectly with an evening visit after sunset. If you're up for a longer excursion, the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani sits about 7.7km away and offers a quieter, more contemplative side of the island.
The Delos-on-the-horizon shot at sunset is the defining frame — shoot from the waterline with the golden sand in the foreground and the sacred island behind.
The warm late-afternoon light on the beach itself, with blue water and the west-coast sky, is a reliable second composition that needs no filter.
Where to eat
Aperanto Galazio Cuisine Bar and Kuzina Restaurant, both about 1km away, serve Mediterranean dishes that suit a post-swim lunch. For something more traditionally Greek, To Apomero and Grillhouse Taverna Lefteris are around 1km from the beach. If you're after something casual, Soulatso Pizza & Pasta is also nearby at 1.1km.
Where to stay
Hotel Erato is the closest option at 0.9km, a solid base for easy beach access. Mykonos Ammos Hotel and Asteri Hotel are both around 1.1km away, while Dionysos Luxury Hotel and KENSHŌ Boutique Hotel offer more upscale stays within 1.3km of the sand.
Photography
The best shot on the island is the Delos silhouette framed against a west-coast sunset — plant yourself on the beach in the last hour of daylight and shoot toward the horizon. For golden-hour portraits, the warm light on the golden sand between 6pm and sunset is flattering and distinctly Mykonian.
Good to know
The beach is safe for swimming, so go ahead and get in the water. Sunset is the unmissable moment here — position yourself well before the sun drops, as the Delos view becomes genuinely spectacular. Parking fills quickly in July and August, so the bus from Fabrika is a smarter move on busy days. The relaxed vibe rewards those who linger: pack a book, stay for the golden hour, and don't rush off.
