Lioliou Beach
Boat-only golden sands with an authentic Greek soul

About
sits on the northeast coast of Mykonos, reachable only by sea — and that's exactly what keeps it honest. Golden sand meets blue water in a setting that feels genuinely local, where fishing boats bob nearby and the pace is unhurried. The vibe here is relaxed rather than performative: Greek families, a family taverna, no road noise. It's the kind of place that reminds you what the Cyclades looked like before the party boats arrived.
How to get there
has no road access — the only way in is by boat or ferry. Head to the nearest embarkation point near Ornos and arrange a boat transfer; there is no parking because there is no land approach. Plan your departure time carefully, as you'll be dependent on return boat schedules to get back.
Who it's for
For couples
The boat-only access naturally filters out the day-tripper rush, leaving couples with golden sand, blue water, and a genuinely unhurried atmosphere — rare on Mykonos.
For families
The relaxed, local Greek character of suits families who want calm water and a family taverna atmosphere rather than beach-bar noise; just plan the boat logistics carefully with young children.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
is one of those beaches that earns its reputation through absence — no road, no car park, no parade of sunbed vendors. The boat-only access is a filter, and what it filters out is most of what makes other Mykonos beaches exhausting. Golden sand, blue water, fishing boats, a family taverna atmosphere, and a Greek visitors that actually lives here. Go between June and September, sort your boat transfer from Ornos in advance, and bring everything you need for the day. It won't suit everyone — and that's the point.
What to do
After the beach, the iconic Little Venice district of Mykonos is roughly 2.6km away — worth a late-afternoon visit when the light hits the waterfront houses. The Melpo Axioti Statue, about 2.5km from the beach, honours one of Greece's most celebrated writers and makes for a quiet cultural detour. The fishing-boat atmosphere at the beach itself is part of the draw — watch the local boats come and go as part of the experience.
Frame the fishing boats against the golden sand with the blue Aegean behind them — morning light before 9am is cleanest.
The view from the water looking back at the beach with the Cycladic coastline as backdrop gives a wide, uncluttered shot worth the early boat crossing.
Where to eat
Near the Ornos embarkation area, Porto Ornos serves Greek cuisine just 0.1km away, and Aperanto Galazio Cuisine Bar offers Mediterranean dishes at the same distance. Kuzina Restaurant rounds out the options with Mediterranean cooking right at the 0km mark — solid choices for a meal before or after your boat crossing.
Where to stay
Mykonos Ammos Hotel is the closest option at just 0.1km from the access point, followed by Hotel Erato and Dionysos Luxury Hotel both at 0.2km. For a more boutique experience, KENSHŌ Boutique Hotel is 0.3km away and Asteri Hotel sits at the same distance.
Photography
Shoot from the water's edge in the early morning when the golden sand catches low-angle light and the fishing boats are still at rest. The northeast coastal perspective looking back toward the Cycladic landscape gives a clean, uncluttered frame that's hard to find on busier Mykonos beaches.
Good to know
Come early in the day to settle in before other visitors make the crossing. Because access is boat-only, bring everything you need — sunscreen, water, cash — as supplies on-site may be limited. The best months to visit are June through September when the Cycladic climate is reliably warm and the sea is calm enough for comfortable crossings. The beach is non-naturist, so standard swimwear is the norm.
