About

Bang Tao Beach stretches nearly 9 km in an almost perfectly straight line along Phuket's Andaman coast, its golden sand wide enough at low tide to feel genuinely spacious even when the beach clubs are doing brisk business. The water runs turquoise close to shore, shifting deeper as you wade out, and the long flat sand exposed at low tide is one of the most satisfying stretches to walk barefoot in northern Phuket. The southern half is anchored by the Laguna resort complex — multiple hotels, a golf course, and a lagoon all woven together — while the northern end softens into a quieter expat and villa community. Beach clubs with a Seminyak-style energy line the mid-section, making this one of the few Phuket beaches where a sundowner cocktail and a serious swim can both happen on the same afternoon.

How to get there

By car, Bang Tao is about 20 minutes from both Phuket City and Phuket International Airport (HKT, 12.6 km away), making it one of the most convenient long beaches on the island. Ferries also serve the area with a roughly 30-minute crossing. Parking is available in mixed formats: the Laguna resort section offers free parking for visitors, while individual beach clubs run their own facilities that may vary in price. Public beach access must remain open under Thai law, so you can always reach the sand on foot even if you're not staying at a resort.

Who it's for

For couples

The Laguna end of Bang Tao offers a polished sunset-walk setting — golden sand, turquoise water, and a string of beach clubs where you can move from a late swim to a cocktail without changing location.

For families

The Laguna resort section has better infrastructure and calmer, more supervised stretches of beach; the wide low-tide sand flat gives younger children plenty of room to run, and the resort's facilities mean you're never far from shade, food, or a clean bathroom.

Our take

Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen

Bang Tao is the Phuket beach that does the most things at once — and mostly pulls it off. The sheer length of the shoreline means the beach-club energy at the centre doesn't swallow the quieter northern and southern ends, and the golden sand genuinely earns its reputation at low tide. Safety first: rip currents are real during the May–October monsoon, red flags are not decorative, and you should stay out of the water when they're flying. The dry season window from November to April is when this beach operates at full capacity — Laguna humming, beach clubs busy, the Andaman at its most turquoise. Come in the shoulder months of November or April if you want the good weather without the peak-weekend intensity. It's not a beach for solitude-seekers, but if you want a long walk, a decent swim in calm conditions, and a cold drink at the end of it, Bang Tao delivers.— The wmb team

What to do

The Laguna Phuket complex (0.5 km) is the obvious anchor — its lagoon, golf course, and interconnected hotels make for a half-day wander even if you're not a guest. Two kilometres north, Layan Beach sits at the estuary mouth where the landscape turns noticeably wilder and the visitors thin out fast. Porto de Phuket (1.9 km) is a short drive away for shopping and casual dining, and the Surin Beach Viewpoint (3.1 km) gives you a rewarding elevated perspective over this stretch of the Andaman coast. The Phuket Marathon also uses the area around Bang Tao (0.8 km) if you happen to be here during race season.

Instagram spots

The wide low-tide sand flat at sunrise gives you a mirror-like foreground with the full nine-kilometre shoreline receding into the distance — arrive before 7 am for the cleanest shot.

The Laguna lagoon entrance, where resort palms frame the turquoise water against golden sand, is the most composed mid-beach frame. At dusk, the beach club strip facing west delivers warm-toned silhouette shots that work well without any filter.

Where to eat

Bang Tao Beach Restaurant (0.7 km) covers a lot of ground — fish, grilled meats, seafood, Asian dishes, pizza, and barbecue all on one menu, which makes it a reliable all-rounder for groups with different appetites. Golden Fish (0.7 km) keeps things tighter with Thai food and fresh seafood, and Albatross (0.3 km) is close enough to the sand to make a quick lunch stop easy. Casuarira beach (0.2 km) is the nearest option if you want to eat without straying far from your towel.

Where to stay

Angsana Laguna Phuket (0.5 km) is the flagship address here, sitting inside the Laguna complex with direct access to the beach and the resort's lagoon facilities. Amora Beach Resort (1.2 km) and Hotel COCO Phuket Bangtao Beach (1.4 km) offer mid-range alternatives within easy walking distance of the sand. The recently opened Blu Monkey Hub and Hotel Bangtao (1.5 km) rounds out the options for travellers who want something newer and more casual.

Photography

The best light hits the golden sand during the hour after sunrise, when the beach is at its emptiest and the turquoise water catches a warm glow — walk south toward the Laguna lagoon entrance for a clean foreground. At sunset, position yourself mid-beach facing west for the full nine-kilometre perspective, with the beach clubs' silhouettes and palm fringe framing the Andaman horizon.

Good to know

Beach club sunbeds come with a minimum spend requirement — confirm the amount before you settle in, or head to the public sections of the beach where no spend is expected. During peak season (November–April), especially on weekends, the beach club strip gets lively and busy, so arrive early if you want a prime spot. From May through October the monsoon brings rip currents; always observe red flag warnings and do not enter the water when flags are flying — rip currents are a genuine hazard here, not a formality. The northern end near Layan stays quieter year-round and is worth the extra walk if you prefer space over scene.

Frequently asked

Swimming is rated moderate in calm conditions during the dry season (November–April). From May to October, monsoon swells generate rip currents — always check the flag warnings and do not enter the water when red flags are flying. The Laguna resort section tends to have calmer, better-monitored stretches.
Avoid May through October. The monsoon brings stronger surf, rip currents, and red-flag closures. The beach club scene goes quiet and conditions can be genuinely hazardous in the water. November through April is the reliable dry-season window.
Parking is free for visitors at the Laguna resort section. Individual beach clubs along the strip run their own parking facilities, which may charge or vary in type — check with the specific club before you arrive.
No. Dogs are generally not permitted on the main tourist beaches in Phuket, and Bang Tao is no exception. Leave your dog at your accommodation.
Yes — beach club sunbeds at Bang Tao require a minimum spend. Confirm the amount with the club before sitting down. Under Thai law, public beach access must remain open, so you can always use the free public sections of the sand without any obligation to spend.
Phuket International Airport (HKT) is 12.6 km from Bang Tao, roughly a 20-minute drive by car. It's one of the closest long beaches to the airport on the island, which makes it a practical first or last stop on a Phuket trip.
Yes, particularly the Laguna resort end (0.5 km), which has better infrastructure, shade, and facilities. The wide low-tide sand flat gives children plenty of room to play safely away from the water. Stick to the dry season (November–April) and always watch the flag warnings near the waterline.
