Koh Lao Beach
A staghorn coral wall where the reef begins at your feet

About
Koh Lao sits in the Andaman Sea off Satun, a tiny uninhabited island that appears on almost no standard itinerary. Its white sand shore stretches roughly 150 metres and drops almost immediately into a staghorn coral wall — one of the most intact reef systems in the region. The water is crystal clear, the island is empty, and there is zero tourist infrastructure of any kind. You'll hear nothing but the sea. This is what the Andaman looked like before the resorts arrived.
How to get there
Koh Lao is boat-access only — there is no road, no jetty infrastructure, and no way to walk or drive here. Charter a private longtail or speedboat from Ko Lipe's Pattaya Beach; the crossing takes around 20 minutes on demand. A national park entry fee of 200 THB per person applies on arrival. Day access only — no overnight stays are permitted.
Who it's for
For couples
Koh Lao is about as private as a beach gets — empty shore, no other visitors, no vendors, just white sand and open sea. Charter the boat for yourselves and you'll have the entire island.
For families
Families with confident young snorkellers will love the immediate reef access, but the lack of any facilities — no shade structures, no toilets, no food, no first aid — means younger children or non-swimmers may find a full day here uncomfortable. Plan a shorter visit and bring everything from Ko Lipe.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Koh Lao is not for everyone, and that's exactly the point. You need to organise a private charter, bring your own gear, pay the national park fee, and accept that if something goes wrong there is no help on the island. Do all of that, and you get one of the last genuinely empty reef beaches in the Thai Andaman — a staghorn coral wall starting at your feet, white sand, crystal-clear water, and no one else. Skip it entirely between May and October; monsoon conditions make the small-boat crossing unsafe. Come between November and April, keep the reef rules, and leave no trace.
What to do
The reef is the activity — plan to spend most of your time in the water along the staghorn coral wall that begins right from shore. When you're done snorkelling, Ko Balo Beach is about 2km away, a tiny uninhabited island with a walkable reef table at low tide worth combining into a full-day charter. Back on Ko Lipe, Ko Yang Beach (4km) offers a crescent shore with visible coral from the waterline, and Pattaya Beach (3km) is the island's main hub if you need to re-enter civilisation.
Stand at the water's edge and frame the white sand curving into crystal-clear Andaman water with zero human presence — shoot early morning for the cleanest light and mirror-flat surface.
Underwater along the staghorn coral wall is the second unmissable frame; the coral formations rising from depth photograph dramatically with natural light in the first hours after arrival.
Where to eat
There is no food or water available on Koh Lao — bring everything you need for the day. Once back on Ko Lipe, Thai Thai Restaurant and Kaixolipe Restaurant (both within 0.3km of the main beach area) cover solid Thai food, while Sunrise Beach Restaurant handles breakfast, pancakes, and Italian if you're heading out on an early charter.
Where to stay
Satun Dive Resort and Andaman Resort are both within 0.2km of Ko Lipe's Pattaya Beach — the logical embarkation point for your Koh Lao charter. Oasis Lipe Resort and San Pita Resort sit within 0.3km if you want a quieter base, and Brother Hotel is a short walk further at 0.4km.
Photography
The best shot is from the waterline looking back at the white sand against the crystal-clear Andaman water — shoot in the morning when the light is low and the surface is glassy. Underwater, the staghorn coral wall offers dramatic wide-angle frames; bring a waterproof camera or housing because there's no other way to capture what makes this place worth the charter.
Good to know
Bring all your own snorkel gear — absolutely nothing is available on the island, and the coral wall is the entire point of coming. The staghorn wall can be disorienting for inexperienced snorkelers, so stay calm, stay shallow, and never touch or collect coral. Instruct your boat captain to use a sand anchor only — anchoring on the reef is prohibited under national park rules. No fires, no camping, and no pets are allowed; these rules are enforced under national park regulations.
