Surin Beach
Phuket's golden shore where luxury meets the Andaman

About
Surin Beach stretches roughly 1,000 metres of coarse golden sand along Phuket's Andaman coast, framed by casuarina trees that throw welcome shade across the shoreline. The blue water looks inviting, but the beach earns its reputation more for its upscale beach club scene than for swimming — powerful shore-break rules the wet season and demands respect year-round. An expat and celebrity visitors gravitates here, drawn by the polished amenities and the rocky south reef that adds drama to the southern end. It's one of Phuket's more refined stretches — moderate visitor numbers keep it from feeling overwhelmed, yet the vibe is unmistakably luxe.
How to get there
From Phuket City, drive west — the journey takes around 35 minutes by car. Ample shaded parking is available behind the beach at no charge. Phuket International Airport (HKT) sits 15.9 km away, making Surin a practical first or last stop on any island itinerary. There is no entry fee to the public beach itself — Thai law guarantees open public access along the shoreline.
Who it's for
For couples
The casuarina shade, upscale beach club atmosphere, and proximity to the Amanpuri headland make Surin a strong pick for couples who want scenery and style over swimming. Come between November and April when the sea is calm and the evenings are warm enough to linger.
For families
Surin suits families best in the dry season (November to April) when shore-break is manageable, but parents should supervise children near the water at all times given the moderate swimming conditions even then. The free shaded parking and nearby restaurants at Tukta and Charm make a day trip logistically straightforward.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Surin is not Phuket's best swimming beach — be clear-eyed about that before you go. From May through October the shore-break is powerful enough to injure, and jellyfish blooms in July and August add another layer of risk; the sea is effectively off-limits for half the year. Come between November and April, when the Andaman settles, the coarse golden sand dries out beautifully, and the beach club scene hits its stride. The rocky south reef is worth a snorkel on a calm dry-season morning, and the Laem Singh viewpoint alone justifies the drive from Phuket City. Surin rewards visitors who treat it as a place to see, eat well, and relax under the casuarinas — not a place to chase waves. If that trade-off suits you, it's one of the island's more characterful northern beaches.
What to do
Walk five minutes south to the Surin Beach Viewpoint for a sweeping look back along the golden shoreline, then push a little further to Laem Singh viewpoint — one of the most photographed headland vistas on the island. The legendary Amanpuri Resort sits on the Surin headland just 0.5 km away; even if you're not staying, its 1988 architecture is a landmark of Asian luxury design worth a look from the road. Kamala Beach, 3 km south, offers a complete change of pace — a working Muslim fishing village with a noticeably more relaxed atmosphere.
The Laem Singh viewpoint delivers a headland-framed shot of blue Andaman water and golden sand that performs well at golden hour.
The casuarina tree line mid-beach creates natural framing for portraits in soft afternoon light. The rocky south reef at low tide adds texture and contrast that the open sand alone can't match.
Where to eat
Tukta coffee shop, 0.3 km from the sand, covers your morning caffeine and Asian bites without fuss. Mr. Tan Coffee House at 0.6 km punches well above its size with a menu spanning regional Thai, Italian, burgers, and fish — useful when the group can't agree. Charm Restaurant, also 0.6 km away, keeps things focused on Thai cooking if that's what you're after.
Where to stay
Twinpalms Phuket and The Chava Resort both sit 0.4 km from the beach and represent the polished end of the local accommodation spectrum. For something more intimate, Surin Bay Inn is just 0.2 km away — the closest option to the sand. The Novotel Hotel & Resort Phuket Surin at 0.5 km adds a reliable international-brand option for those who want consistent standards.
Photography
Shoot from the Laem Singh viewpoint at golden hour — the headland frames the blue Andaman water and casuarina-lined shore in a single composition that rewards patience. Early morning on the beach itself, before the beach clubs set up, gives you the coarse golden sand and the rocky south reef without distraction.
Good to know
Beach club sunbeds come with a minimum spend requirement, so settle that before you get comfortable — but remember that the public sand is yours by law and no operator can block your access. From May through October, a powerful shore-break makes swimming genuinely dangerous; do not enter the water during these months. Jellyfish blooms are reported specifically in July and August — an additional reason to stay out of the sea in high season. Wheelchair users should note that the coarse sand and limited facilities make access difficult.
