Agia Marina BeachGreece Beach Guide
White sand, turquoise calm, and a chapel on the hill

About
sits on Sifnos's east coast, where the hillside chapel that gives the beach its name watches over a sweep of white sand and turquoise water. Because it faces east, the morning light hits the shore early and cleanly — arrive before noon and the colours are at their sharpest. The Meltemi, that relentless summer wind that punishes exposed Cycladic beaches, loses its teeth here; the east-coast position gives the bay real shelter when the rest of the island is choppy. A seasonal beach bar and a traditional village backdrop round out a setting that feels genuinely unhurried.
How to get there
From Apollonia, the island capital, it's a quick six-minute drive — easy road access by car, daily. A small informal parking area is available free of charge, but spaces are limited, so arrive early in peak season. There is no entry fee. Visitors arriving by sea can reach Sifnos via GA Ferries, then make the short drive from the port.
Who it's for
For couples
The quiet atmosphere and morning sun make a genuinely peaceful spot for two — stake out a patch of white sand early, then walk up to Exambela village together before the day heats up.
For families
Safe swimming, easy road access, free parking, and a dog-friendly policy make this a low-stress family beach; the shallow, calm turquoise water is forgiving for younger swimmers, and the seasonal beach bar means you're not rationing snacks all day.
Our take
is one of those beaches that earns its reputation through understatement. Swimming is safe, the water is genuinely turquoise, and the Meltemi shelter means you can actually enjoy a towel on the sand without it becoming a kite. It's quiet without being remote — Apollonia is six minutes away, Exambela is a short walk uphill, and Kastro is worth the three-kilometre drive. The family vibe is real: easy access, free parking, dogs welcome, calm water. The one honest caveat is the limited parking — get there early or accept a wait. Come for the morning light on that chapel, stay for the calm.
What to do
The traditional Cycladic village of Exambela sits just 0.5 km above the beach and is worth a short walk for its notable church and whitewashed lanes. A few kilometres further, Apollonia — the island capital — holds a Folklore Museum and traditional pottery workshops. History lovers should push on to Kastro, a Venetian-era fortified hilltop village about 3 km away with intact medieval architecture that rewards the detour.
Frame the hillside chapel from the waterline at sunrise — the east-facing orientation means the light is perfect in the first hours of the morning, with turquoise water in the foreground and whitewashed walls glowing behind.
The village backdrop of Exambela rising above the white sand gives a classic Cycladic layered composition best captured from the far end of the beach.
Where to eat
Kafenes is the closest option, just 0.4 km from the beach — a natural first stop for a coffee or a light bite after a swim. A pizzeria and the Italian restaurant Camaron are both within easy reach at 0.6 km and 0.7 km respectively, giving you a decent range of options without straying far.
Where to stay
Several places to stay sit right at the beach or within a few steps: Alk Hoteltm, Mosha Pension, and Iliofegaro Rooms Hotel are all effectively on the doorstep. Villa Frazeska and Litsa Rooms are just 0.1 km away — close enough to walk to the sand in under two minutes.
Photography
The hillside chapel is the standout compositional anchor — shoot it from the shoreline with the turquoise water in the foreground during the golden hour after sunrise, when the east-facing orientation floods the scene with warm directional light. For a wider village-backdrop shot, step back toward the parking area and frame the white sand against the Cycladic rooftops of Exambela on the hill.
Good to know
Swimming is rated safe, and the sheltered position keeps conditions calm for most of the season — still, check local conditions after strong weather before entering the water. Dogs are welcome on the beach with no formal restrictions outside any organised sections, so keep that in mind if you're travelling with young children. The parking area is small and informal; if it's full, don't block the road — turn around and try again later in the day when visitors rotate. The best months to visit are June through September; outside that window, the beach bar and some nearby services may be closed.
