Vouliagmeni LakeGreece Beach Guide
Athens' thermal lake where geology meets relaxation

About
is a brackish thermal lake on the Athens Riviera, carved into a limestone cliff overhang and connected to the sea through an underground channel — a geological rarity in Attica. The water glows turquoise and holds a steady 22–26°C year-round, making it swimmable in every season. There's no sand here; the lake edge is rocky, and the atmosphere is deliberately calm and spa-like. Small Garra rufa doctor fish inhabit the water, nibbling at skin as you float — an unexpected sensory detail that surprises first-timers. At roughly 34 metres across, it's intimate rather than expansive, and that's entirely the point.
How to get there
sits within the Vouliagmeni Municipal Unit, about 35 minutes by car from Athens centre — a straightforward daily drive. Complimentary parking is available on site, though spaces fill up quickly in peak season, so arrive early. Entry to the lake itself costs €17 on weekdays and €19 on weekends and public holidays (2025 rates); if you're only visiting the on-site café or restaurant, the fee is waived. A short ferry connection of around 15 minutes is also available for those approaching from the water.
Who it's for
For couples
The warm turquoise water, year-round accessibility, and unhurried spa vibe make this a genuinely romantic detour — float together in 22–26°C thermal water while the limestone cliff rises above you, and follow it with dinner at O Takis just 0.5 km away.
For families
Families with older children who are comfortable with the Garra rufa fish experience will enjoy the safe, calm water and easy access — but note that the rocky lake edge requires care for young children, and dogs are not permitted inside the facility.
Our take
is one of those places that sounds implausible until you're standing in front of it — a turquoise thermal lake tucked under a limestone cliff, connected to the sea underground, warm every single day of the year. It's not a beach in any conventional sense: no sand, no diving. What it offers instead is something rarer — a geological curiosity that doubles as a spa, right on the edge of Athens. The entry fee is real, the Garra rufa fish are real, and the 22–26°C water is real. Come for a slow morning float, not a full beach day. Pair it with Vouliagmeni Beach or Astir Beach nearby if you need sand and sun loungers. Worth the detour, especially outside the peak summer months when the atmosphere stays genuinely relaxed.
What to do
The lake itself is the main event, but the surrounding Athens Riviera rewards exploration. Astir Beach, about 1 km away, offers a luxury Four Seasons peninsula setting with twin coves if you want a conventional sandy swim after your thermal soak. Vouliagmeni Beach, 1.5 km from the lake, is a wide crescent with organised facilities — a good contrast to the lake's rocky intimacy. For something more ambitious, the ancient Temple of Poseidon at Sounion is 28 km away, perched on a cliff above the Aegean and well worth the drive.
The limestone cliff overhang reflected in the turquoise thermal water is the defining frame — position yourself to capture the rock face rising above the lake for maximum geological drama.
The Garra rufa fish visible just below the surface make for an unusual close-up detail shot that captures the lake's quirky character.
Where to eat
O Takis, a Greek taverna just 0.5 km from the lake, is the closest option for a post-soak meal. Kastelorizo and Bavaria, both within a short drive, offer further dining if you want to linger on the Riviera into the evening. Garbi, around 2.5 km away, rounds out the local options for those willing to drive a short stretch.
Where to stay
The nearest hotels are a short drive inland — Parthenis and Minavra are both within about 5.5–5.6 km of the lake, making them convenient bases for an early-morning visit before the day-visitors arrive. Congo Palace at 6.7 km and Ace Hotel & Swim Club Athens at 8.5 km offer further options if you want to combine the thermal lake with a broader Athens Riviera stay.
Photography
The limestone cliff overhang framing the turquoise water is the shot. The contrast between the pale rock face and the glowing thermal water is the defining visual of the lake.
Good to know
An entry fee is required to swim in the lake — have cash or card ready at the gate. Diving is strictly prohibited. The Garra rufa doctor fish are a protected part of the ecosystem: do not disturb or attempt to catch them. If you have open wounds or a strong aversion to small fish making contact with your skin, this lake is not suitable for you — the doctor fish will find you.
