Groede Beach
Golden sand, grey North Sea, zero infrastructure — genuinely empty

About
Strand Groede stretches along the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen coast in the municipality of Sluis, Zeeland, backed by flat polder farmland that gives it a landscape unlike any other Dutch beach. The golden sand runs wide and open, meeting the grey North Sea in a way that feels raw and unmediated — no beach bars, no sun-lounger rentals, no signage. A single dune path from Groede village is your only way in, and on most days you'll have the whole shore to yourself. This is the North Sea at its most elemental: wind-scoured, honest, and quietly dramatic.
How to get there
Strand Groede is reached on foot only — a roughly 10-minute walk along a single dune path from Groede village, accessible daily. There is no road access to the beach itself, and no formal car park; informal roadside parking in Groede village is the only option. There is no entry fee. The dune path and soft sand are not accessible by wheelchair.
Who it's for
For couples
For couples who want solitude without effort, this is it — a long, empty stretch of golden sand with only the wind and the grey North Sea for company, and a 10-minute walk that keeps the daytrippers away.
For families
Families with dogs will find Strand Groede ideal for a free-range beach day, but come fully self-sufficient: pack food, water, and sun protection, as there is nothing on-site and the nearest food stop is Strandhuys Jaxx, 0.3 km away.
Our take
Strand Groede is not a beach you stumble upon — you have to want it. There is no infrastructure, no lifeguard, and North Sea rip currents are a real hazard: swim with serious caution or don't swim at all. What you get in return is a long, golden-sand shore that is genuinely empty on most days, backed by polder farmland that gives the whole place an otherworldly flatness. The 10-minute walk from Groede village is the only ticket in, and it keeps the numbers down. Come between June and September, bring everything you need, and take everything home. This is one of the few places on the Dutch coast where the North Sea still feels like it belongs to no one.
What to do
Two uitkijkplatforms (viewing platforms) sit within 2.5 km, offering elevated views across the polder and coastline that reward the short detour. About 6.4 km west, Strand Cadzand-Bad is known for hunting fossil shark teeth along the tideline — a genuinely unusual activity for the whole family. The historic fortified town of Sluis, 8.5 km away, has a working windmill and makes a satisfying half-day cultural add-on. For nature on a grander scale, the cross-border Zwin Natuur Park is 12 km away on the Belgian-Dutch border.
The dune path exit onto the beach — dune grass framing the wide golden sand with the grey North Sea horizon — is the shot that defines this place.
Turn inland from the waterline for the polder backdrop: flat agricultural fields behind the dunes, a composition that is distinctly Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and unlike anything else on the Dutch coast.
Where to eat
The closest option is Strandhuys Jaxx, just 0.3 km from the beach — handy for a meal before or after your walk. Strandpaviljoen Proost is 1.1 km away and offers a regional flavour of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Hoofdkwartier (1.6 km) and Heerlyckheijd (2.4 km) round out the local options, but pack your own lunch if you want to eat on the sand — nothing is available at the beach itself.
Where to stay
The nearest hotels are a short drive away: Strandhotel at 7.1 km is the closest, followed by Hotel de Ruyter (7.8 km) and Hotel Zilt (7.9 km). Michieltje is also at 7.9 km, and for those willing to travel a little further, Oase is 11.1 km from the beach.
Photography
Shoot early morning when low light rakes across the golden sand and the grey North Sea takes on a silver sheen — the polder agricultural backdrop behind the dunes makes for a composition you won't find on any other Dutch beach. The single dune path entrance, framed by dune grass with flat farmland beyond, is the defining image of Strand Groede's Zeeuws-Vlaanderen character.
Good to know
There are zero facilities here — carry all your water, food, and waste in and out; leave nothing behind. No lifeguard is on duty, and North Sea rip currents are possible: do not swim unless you are a confident open-water swimmer who understands tidal conditions, and even then exercise serious caution. Dogs are freely permitted with no restrictions, making this a fine stretch for a long off-lead walk. Avoid visiting November through February — the beach is cold, fully exposed, and entirely without shelter.
