San Michele BeachItaly Beach Guide
Hike to a wild Conero cove with crystal-clear water.

About
Escape to Spiaggia di San Michele, a wild and quiet cove on Italy's Conero Riviera. This beach features a mix of white sand and pebbles, lapped by crystal-clear water perfect for snorkeling. Access is via a steep cliff path, which keeps it feeling secluded and frequented mainly by locals. A unique freshwater spring runs right on the beach, adding to its untamed character.
How to get there
Reaching Spiaggia di San Michele requires some effort. The main access is a 15-minute hike down a steep path from the village of Sirolo. During the high season, a shuttle bus runs daily from Sirolo Town Hall. Road access for cars is only available during the off-peak season; otherwise, you must use the paid parking ('a pagamento') in Sirolo village. The path is completely inaccessible for wheelchairs.
Who it's for
For couples
The difficult access and quiet, wild atmosphere make this a perfect escape for couples seeking a secluded spot away from the main tourist beaches. It's a rewarding destination after a shared hike.
For families
This beach is best for families with older, adventurous children who can safely manage a steep 15-minute hike. Always check the path's condition locally before starting your descent, and remember to carry all your own supplies as there are no facilities.
Our take
Spiaggia di San Michele is not a casual, drop-in beach; it's a destination you have to earn. The steep hike down from Sirolo filters out the masses, leaving a quiet, wild cove for those who make the journey. Its lack of facilities is a key part of its charm, preserving a natural state that feels worlds away from more developed resorts. The reward is swimming in exceptionally clear water in a stunning natural amphitheater. It's a true slice of the Conero Riviera for visitors who prefer nature over amenities. Worth the effort.
What to do
The clear water is the main draw, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Beyond the beach, explore the medieval hilltop village of Sirolo, with its panoramic Adriatic views. You can also hike in the Parco del Conero or take a boat trip from Sirolo's harbour to the iconic sea-stack cove of Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle, just 3km away.
The classic shot is from the Belvedere looking down the winding path to the beach below.
Another great spot is by the freshwater spring on the beach, capturing a unique natural feature.
Where to eat
There are no facilities on the beach itself, so you'll need to pack a picnic or head back up to Sirolo. The village offers several options within a short walk, including regional dishes at Da Silvio, pizza at El Varolo, and Italian cuisine at L'Osteria.
Where to stay
Stay in the charming village of Sirolo to be close to the beach path. Nearby options include Hotel Ristorante Stella and Il Vicolo Relais, both within 0.7km. For a more secluded stay, Hotel Monteconero is located 2.1km away, offering wider views of the park.
Photography
For the best shots, capture the view from the top of the cliff path looking down onto the cove, especially in the morning light. On the beach, the contrast between the white pebbles, crystal-clear water, and green cliffs is stunning.
Good to know
This is a wild beach with no facilities, so bring everything you need for the day. As it's located within the Parco del Conero, natural park regulations apply: no camping and no fires are permitted. Crucially, the path condition can vary, so it's wise to check locally before you descend, especially if you are with children.
