White pebbles, turquoise water, zero facilities — bring everything

About
Spiaggia della Vela sits within the Conero Riviera in Ancona, Marche, a sheltered cove where a distinctive sail-shaped rocky spur rises from the water and gives the beach its name. The mix of white pebbles and sand meets turquoise water that stays clear enough for snorkeling straight from the shore. An oak woodland path connects it to Portonovo bay, so the approach itself is part of the experience — cool shade before the open glare of the cove. No sun-lounger concessions, no beach bars, no lifeguard: what you get is quiet, and that's the whole point. It's one of the calmer alternatives to the main Portonovo bay, sitting inside the boundaries of Parco del Conero.
How to get there
You can reach Spiaggia della Vela on foot or by boat. The most common route is a 15-minute hike along an oak woodland path from the Portonovo bay car park — paid parking is available there, with a shuttle bus service to the beaches. Alternatively, arrive by boat from Portonovo bay. Note that the passage between the two coves involves fallen rocks and is considered dangerous; access to the smaller cove by sea is strongly recommended over attempting that crossing on foot.
Who it's for
For couples
The quiet atmosphere and the short woodland hike in make Spiaggia della Vela a genuinely private escape for two — pack a picnic, find a spot on the white pebbles, and you'll likely have more space than you'd expect even in high season.
For families
The sheltered cove and safe swimming conditions work well for families with older children who can manage the 15-minute hike and are steady on pebbles, but the slippery rocks near the sail-shaped spur require close supervision and the complete absence of facilities means you must bring everything — water, snacks, first aid.
Our take
No lifeguard, no bar, no shade structures — Spiaggia della Vela asks something of you before it gives anything back. The 15-minute hike through oak woodland is the price of admission, and it filters out anyone who isn't serious about being here. Once you arrive, the turquoise water against white pebbles and the sail-shaped rock is as striking as the name suggests. Snorkelers will want to head straight for the San Francesco di Catone wreck just 0.1 km offshore. Stay alert near the rocky spur — the surfaces are genuinely slippery, and there is no one on site to help if something goes wrong. Skip the passage between the two coves entirely; fallen rocks make it hazardous and the sea route is the right call. Come between June and September, carry everything you need, and leave nothing behind.
What to do
The wreck of the merchant vessel Relitto mercantile 'San Francesco di Catone' lies just 0.1 km away and is a rewarding spot for snorkelers and divers curious about what's beneath the surface. A short walk brings you to the Chiesa di Santa Maria di Portonovo, a historic chapel sitting close to the shoreline at 0.8 km. The Belvedere Nord viewpoint at 0.7 km rewards the short detour with open views along the Conero coast.
The sail-shaped rocky spur reflected in turquoise water is the defining frame — shoot from low on the white pebbles at mid-morning before the light goes flat.
The oak woodland path on the approach offers a second, completely different shot: dappled green canopy with the cove glinting at the end of the trail.
Where to eat
There are no facilities on the beach itself, so eat before you arrive or carry a packed lunch. Clandestino susci bar is the closest option at 0.9 km, followed by the seafood-focused Ristorante Manifattura di Mare at 1 km. For a more traditional sit-down meal after the hike back, Osteria del Poggio at 1.9 km and Trattoria Mafalda at 2 km are both within easy reach of Portonovo bay.
Where to stay
Hotel Fortino Napoleonico at 1.2 km is the closest base and puts you conveniently near the coast. Hotel Internazionale at 1 km is another convenient option if you want to be close to the coast. For more distance from the beach scene, Hotel Ristorante Stella at 4.1 km and Il Vicolo Relais at 4.3 km offer a quieter alternative.
Photography
The sail-shaped rocky spur is the signature shot — frame it from the waterline in the morning when the light hits the white pebbles and the turquoise water is at its calmest. The oak woodland path on the approach also makes for atmospheric, shade-dappled images before you reach the open cove.
Good to know
No lifeguard is on duty and there are zero facilities on site — bring all your water, food, and sun protection before you set off. Watch your footing near the sail-shaped rock, where surfaces are slippery and a fall into the water is a real risk. Natural park regulations apply throughout: no camping and no fires are permitted at any time. Winter months from November through February bring no services and exposed conditions — plan your visit between June and September.
