Pebble shore, crystal water, steps from Portoferraio

About
Spiaggia delle Ghiaie sits on the north coast of Elba, just a short walk from Portoferraio's historic center. The shore is a pleasing mix of pebbles and white sand, and the crystal-clear water shifts through every shade of turquoise as you wade in. At roughly 396 metres long, it's generous enough to breathe, yet compact enough to feel intimate. The relaxed vibe here is genuine — this is a neighbourhood beach as much as a tourist one, and that balance is part of its charm.
How to get there
You can walk from Portoferraio's historic center in about 10 minutes, or from the port in around 15 minutes. Buses run regularly from Portoferraio if you'd rather not walk. If you're driving, the beach is just 3 minutes from the port, but paid parking is available and can be challenging to find during peak season, so arriving early or on foot is the smarter move.
Who it's for
For couples
The relaxed pace and easy evening stroll back into Portoferraio's historic center make this a natural choice for couples — grab dinner at La Lampara, then walk back along the north coast as the light fades.
For families
Safe swimming close to shore, a flat and walkable approach from the port, and multiple restaurants within 0.3 km mean families have everything they need without logistical stress — just pack water shoes for the pebbles.
Our take
Spiaggia delle Ghiaie offers safe swimming, crystal-clear water, and a 10-minute walk from Portoferraio's historic center. The pebble-and-white-sand mix is genuinely pretty, and the relaxed atmosphere doesn't feel manufactured. Be aware that jellyfish can appear farther from shore, so stay close to the beach and keep an eye on conditions. Parking is paid and tight in peak season, so walking or bussing in from Portoferraio is the practical choice. June through September is the window — outside those months the temperate climate can be unpredictable. It won't blow your mind, but it will deliver exactly what it promises: a clean, safe, well-located beach with good food steps away.
What to do
The Faro dello Scoglietto lighthouse is a rewarding short trip at just 1.4 km away. If you want more beach time, Spiaggia Seccione is 2.3 km along the coast and worth exploring on a longer day. For something more active, Monte Capannello offers a proper hike at 5.6 km from the beach. The historic fortifications of Portoferraio are walkable from the shore and add a cultural layer to any visit.
Frame the crystal-clear shallows against the white-and-pebble shore with Portoferraio's historic fortifications on the skyline — it's the defining shot of this beach.
The Faro dello Scoglietto at 1.4 km gives you an elevated coastal perspective that works beautifully in wide-angle. Early morning, before swimmers arrive, the water is glassy and the light is soft — that's your window.
Where to eat
Bar Ristorante Pizzeria La Bussola and Da Paolo are both within 0.1 km of the beach — ideal for a post-swim pizza or a relaxed lunch without straying far from the water. Morsi e bocconi, L'ombelico del mondo, and La Lampara are all within 0.3 km if you want a bit more variety in the evening. You're well served here — no need to pack a full picnic unless you want to.
Where to stay
Hotel Le Ghiaie and Crystal are both just 0.1 km from the beach. Hotel Villa Ombrosa is 0.2 km away, and Hotel Massimo and Villa Padulella are within 0.5 km — all close enough to walk to the shore without a car.
Photography
The best shots are from the waterline at golden hour, looking back toward Portoferraio's historic fortifications rising above the bay — the crystal-clear water and white-and-pebble shore make a strong foreground. Early morning light is cleanest before swimmers arrive, and the Faro dello Scoglietto at 1.4 km is worth the trip for wider coastal compositions.
Good to know
Come early in summer — parking fills fast and the pebbles get warm underfoot by mid-morning, so bring water shoes. Swimming is rated safe close to shore, but watch out for jellyfish farther from the shore and stay within the nearshore zone. Best months to visit are June through September when the northern hemisphere temperate climate delivers reliable warmth. Sunscreen and a beach mat or towel thick enough for pebbles are non-negotiable packing items.
