Ajabo Beach
Golden cove, easy access, blue water — Adeje's family secret

About
Playa de Ajabo is a compact golden-sand cove on Tenerife's southern coast, tucked within the municipality of Adeje. At around 150 metres long, it's small enough to feel personal yet spacious enough for families to spread out comfortably. The blue water is calm and safe for swimming, and the sheltered shape of the cove keeps the atmosphere relaxed even on busier days. Ramp access makes it genuinely inclusive, and free public parking right at the beach removes one of the usual headaches of Tenerife's coast.
How to get there
By car from Adeje the drive takes about 10 minutes, and free public parking is available on-site — spaces are limited, so arrive early in peak season. Bus connections from Adeje run daily and take around 15 minutes, making this an easy car-free trip. There is no entry fee. A ramp provides accessible beach access for visitors with mobility needs.
Who it's for
For couples
The relaxed pace and small scale of Ajabo make it ideal for couples who want a quiet morning swim without the noise of larger resort beaches — arrive early and you may have the golden sand almost to yourselves.
For families
Ramp access, safe swimming, free parking, and a calm cove shape make Ajabo one of the most genuinely family-friendly beaches in the Adeje area — younger children can wade safely while parents set up close by.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Ajabo won't dazzle you with size or drama, but it delivers exactly what it promises: a calm, accessible, golden-sand cove with safe swimming and free parking. That combination is rarer on Tenerife's south coast than you'd think. The ramp access is a genuine plus — this is one of the few beaches in the area where accessibility isn't an afterthought. Skip December and January when winter swells change the mood entirely. Come in June through September, get there early, and you'll find a beach that earns its relaxed reputation without any of the hype.
What to do
Just 2.8km away, La Caleta National Park offers a mountain track connecting traditional fishing villages — a rewarding short detour before or after the beach. The nearby cove of La Caleta de Adeje, rated 4.7 out of 5, is worth a stroll at 3.9km. For a bigger day out, Siam Park — one of Europe's largest water parks — sits about 14km away and pairs well with a morning at Ajabo.
The mouth of the cove frames the blue water against golden sand for a clean wide shot — best captured from the top of the access ramp.
Closer to the waterline, the contrast between the warm sand and the deep blue sea makes for strong colour compositions. Early morning light before other visitors arrive gives you the cleanest, uncluttered frames.
Where to eat
The closest highly-rated dining is H10 Costa Adeje Palace at 4.6km, a solid option for a relaxed lunch or dinner. Further afield, Limonella (4.6/5, 8.6km) and Papagayo Tenerife (4.2/5, 8.3km) are both popular choices in the wider Adeje resort strip. Plan ahead — there are no restaurants directly on the beach.
Where to stay
Hotel Riu Buenavista is the closest option at just 0.6km, making it the most convenient base for repeat visits to Ajabo. Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife is 0.9km away and earns a strong 4.6 out of 5 across nearly 12,000 reviews — a reliable pick if you want more amenities on your doorstep.
Photography
Shoot from the upper edge of the cove in the early morning when the golden sand catches the low light and the blue water is at its calmest. The ramp and cove walls frame a clean, symmetrical composition that works well at golden hour before the beach fills up.
Good to know
Avoid visiting in December and January — winter swells can make conditions rough and swimming uncomfortable. The free parking fills up fast on summer mornings, so aim to arrive before 10am if you're driving. The beach is not naturist. Pack water and snacks if you plan a long stay, as on-beach facilities are limited.
