Postiguet Beach
Alicante's golden city beach, castle views included

About
Platja Postiguet stretches roughly 500 metres of golden sand right at Alicante's doorstep, with blue Mediterranean water lapping at its shore. The beach sits beneath the dramatic silhouette of Santa Bárbara Castle, giving it a backdrop that few urban beaches can match. It's lively by nature — this is a city beach, open 24/7, and it draws swimmers, families, and evening strollers in equal measure. The palm-lined Explanada de España promenade is just steps away, making the whole seafront feel like one long, walkable experience. A Blue Flag rating keeps standards high, even if summer brings its share of packed towels.
How to get there
Platja Postiguet is a five-minute walk from Alicante city centre — the easiest approach if you're already in town. Bus and tram connections from the city centre take around 10 minutes and run daily. If you're driving, street parking nearby is limited and free spots disappear fast; paid public and private parking options are available in the surrounding area. There's no entry fee.
Who it's for
For couples
The Explanada de España promenade, just 0.1km from the beach, is one of Spain's most celebrated evening walks — mosaic pavement, palm trees, and sea air make it a natural end to a beach afternoon for two.
For families
Safe swimming conditions and easy ramp access make Postiguet a practical family beach, and the castle elevator means even young children can reach Santa Bárbara Castle without a gruelling hike. Stick to June or July rather than August for a more manageable experience.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Postiguet punches above its weight for an urban beach. It's not a secluded cove — it's a city beach, and it owns that identity completely. The golden sand, the Blue Flag water, the castle looming overhead, the promenade a minute's walk away: the package is genuinely hard to beat in a Spanish city of this size. That said, be honest with yourself about August — the beach gets seriously packed and the water clarity suffers for it. Come in June or September and you'll find the same setting with room to breathe. The castle elevator is a small detail that makes a real difference, especially if you're travelling with kids or anyone who finds hills difficult. Skip the peak of summer, catch it at either end of the season, and Postiguet delivers.
What to do
The obvious first move is riding the elevator up to Castillo de Santa Bárbara, a medieval fortress just 0.5km away with panoramic views over the city and sea. Back at sea level, the Archaeological Museum of Alicante is a 1km walk and rated among the best in the region. For a longer half-day, a 45-minute boat ride takes you out to Tabarca Island, a marine reserve 15km offshore — one of the most rewarding excursions on this stretch of coast.
The castle-over-beach angle from the northern end of the beach is the defining shot — frame the golden sand and blue water with the fortress above.
The Explanada de España's intricate mosaic pavement, just 0.1km away, is a strong second subject. For something less obvious, the castle elevator shaft offers an unexpected architectural frame looking back toward the sea.
Where to eat
CASABLANCA Restaurante Tapas & paellas is just 0.3km from the sand and earns consistently strong reviews — a solid pick for post-swim paella. The Meliá Alicante hotel, only 0.2km away, also has dining options if you want something more relaxed. For a wider choice, Centro Comercial Plaza Mar 2 is 1.2km along the seafront and covers most bases.
Where to stay
The Meliá Alicante sits 0.2km from the beach and is the closest full-service hotel to the sand, making it the most convenient base for a beach-focused stay. Sercotel Maya Alicante is a solid mid-range option at 0.9km. If you want something quieter and don't mind a longer transfer, Hotel NH Alicante at 2.6km offers strong ratings and easy city access.
Photography
Shoot from the base of Santa Bárbara Castle at golden hour — the castle walls glow above the golden sand and blue water in a way that's hard to replicate at any other time of day. Early morning, just after the 08:30 cleaning window lifts, gives you the beach at its emptiest and the light at its softest.
Good to know
The beach operates 24/7, but water access is typically restricted between 03:00 and 08:30 for cleaning — plan your early-morning swim accordingly. Summer brings noticeably packed conditions, and water clarity can dip when swimmers are at their peak numbers; seaweed patches are an occasional presence too. August is the single month worth avoiding if you dislike shoulder-to-shoulder sand. Beach access is via ramps, and the castle elevator makes the hilltop fortress reachable without a steep climb.
