Postiguet Beach
Alicante's golden city beach, castle views included

About
Platja del Postiguet stretches roughly 500 metres of golden sand along the Alicante waterfront, with blue Mediterranean water lapping at its shore. The beach sits directly beneath the rocky hill of Santa Bárbara Castle, giving it one of the most dramatic urban backdrops on the Costa Blanca. To one side, the palm-lined Explanada de España promenade runs parallel to the sea; to the other, the port's marina hums with activity. It's lively, it's central, and it earns its blue flag year after year.
How to get there
Platja del Postiguet is a five-minute walk from Alicante city centre — just follow the Explanada de España to the sand. Tram and bus connections from the city centre take around two minutes to five minutes, with frequent services throughout the day; a bus from Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) reaches the area in roughly 20 minutes, running every 20 minutes. Drivers will find public and private parking garages plus some street parking behind the promenade — over 100 spaces in the car park, with disabled parking near access 13; expect to pay approximately €0.60–€2 per hour, though limited free parking exists off-season. There is no entry fee to the beach itself.
Who it's for
For couples
An evening walk from the beach along the Explanada de España to the port — with the castle lit up above and the blue water catching the last light — makes for a genuinely romantic end to a beach day. The proximity of good restaurants like CASABLANCA means dinner is never more than a short stroll away.
For families
The easy ramp access, calm blue water with a moderate swimming rating, and the castle elevator make this a practical and exciting day out for families with children of all ages. The Archaeological Museum of Alicante at 0.7km adds an educational option when the kids need a break from the golden sand.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Postiguet punches well above its weight for an urban beach. Yes, it gets packed in summer — that's the honest trade-off for having a blue-flag beach with golden sand, a castle elevator, a world-class promenade, and a marina all within a five-minute walk of a city centre. The swimming is moderate and generally safe; just watch your belongings when you're in the water. Skip August if heat and heavy visitor numbers aren't your thing — June and September give you the same setting with room to breathe. As city beaches go, this one is hard to beat on the Mediterranean.
What to do
The castle elevator, accessible directly from the beach, whisks you up to Castillo de Santa Bárbara — a historic fortress with sweeping panoramic views rated 4.7/5 by visitors, and only 0.3km away. Back at sea level, the Explanada de España promenade invites a slow stroll past mosaic pavements, palm trees, and pavement cafés. The Port of Alicante, right next door, is home to a replica of the 18th-century ship Santísima Trinidad — a surprisingly absorbing stop for history lovers. The Archaeological Museum of Alicante, just 0.7km away and also rated 4.7/5, rounds out a genuinely rich cultural afternoon.
The castle cliff looming over the golden sand is the defining shot — position yourself at the northern end of the beach for the full drama.
The mosaic pavement of the Explanada de España, with its geometric wave pattern and palm trees, is a strong second. The port's replica of the Santísima Trinidad against the blue sky makes for an unexpectedly striking frame just steps from the beach.
Where to eat
Right on the beach you'll find dining options at Platja del Postiguet itself, while CASABLANCA Restaurante Tapas & paellas — 0.6km away and rated 4.6/5 across nearly 6,500 reviews — is the standout local pick for a proper sit-down meal. Voltereta Tanzania, about 1km from the sand and rated an impressive 4.7/5 by over 17,000 reviewers, is worth the short walk. The Meliá Alicante hotel at 0.5km also offers dining if you want something more relaxed and close to the water.
Where to stay
The Meliá Alicante, rated 4.4/5 across nearly 8,000 reviews and just 0.5km from the beach, is the obvious first choice for proximity and comfort. Sercotel Maya Alicante at 0.6km offers a solid 4.2/5 option at what is likely a more accessible price point. For something a little further out, Hotel NH Alicante (4.5/5, 3km away) consistently earns strong marks from guests.
Photography
The best shot on Postiguet is from the water's edge at golden hour, framing the golden sand against the castle cliff face with the blue sea in the foreground — late afternoon light is ideal. For a wider composition, the Explanada de España end of the beach gives you the palm-lined promenade, the port, and the castle all in one sweep.
Good to know
Arrive before mid-morning in July to secure a spot on the golden sand — this beach gets packed fast in peak season. Keep a close eye on your belongings whenever you go for a swim; pickpocketing is a documented risk when bags are left unattended during busy periods. You may encounter occasional seaweed near the water's edge, which is natural and harmless but worth knowing before you wade in. August brings the most intense heat and the heaviest visitor numbers — if you have flexibility, June or September are noticeably more comfortable.
