Ponent Beach
Golden sands, blue water, and PortAventura on your doorstep

About
Playa de Ponent stretches roughly 1,500 metres along the Costa Dorada coastline in Salou, Catalonia, and it earns its reputation as one of the region's most popular beaches. Golden sand runs the full length of the shore, lapped by blue Mediterranean water that's considered safe for swimming. A well-maintained promenade backs the beach, making it easy to stroll from one end to the other without ever losing sight of the sea. The vibe here is lively — families, couples, and day-trippers fill the beach from June onwards, and the energy rarely dips until September. PortAventura World sits just adjacent, so the beach and the theme park together make a natural two-day combination.
How to get there
Playa de Ponent is right on Salou's doorstep — a 10-minute walk from the town centre, or a 5-minute drive. Bus services also connect the beach to the wider area. If you're driving, parking options are mixed: paid lots and port parking are available close to the beach, while free parking can be found roughly 2–3 km away. No specific app or payment system is documented, so carry cash or a card and check signage on arrival.
Who it's for
For couples
An evening walk along the Passeig Jaume I de Salou followed by dinner at The Roadhouse Salou makes for an easy, unhurried night out — the promenade is fully accessible and the blue water at dusk is genuinely pretty.
For families
The safe swimming, long stretch of golden sand, and PortAventura World right next door make this one of the most practical family beaches on the Costa Dorada — kids can split the day between the sea and the theme park without a long transfer.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Playa de Ponent is a genuinely good beach — long, golden, safe to swim, and easy to reach. It's not a secret, and it doesn't pretend to be. In peak summer it's packed, and that's part of its character. The PortAventura adjacency is either a selling point or a dealbreaker depending on what you're after; families will love the combination, while anyone seeking quiet should look further down the coast. One honest note: check local water quality before swimming, as the beach's certification status has a caveat worth taking seriously. Come in June or September if you want the blue water and golden sand without the full summer intensity. This is a workhorse beach — reliable, well-serviced, and exactly what it says it is.
What to do
The Passeig Jaume I de Salou promenade, rated 4.7/5, is a 1.2 km walk from the beach and worth an evening stroll. PortAventura World, right next to the beach, is a major theme park resort with six themed worlds — easy to combine with a beach day. If you're up for a half-day trip, the Tarragona Roman Amphitheatre is about 22.8 km away, a well-preserved 2nd-century ruin that puts the whole region in historical perspective. Cambrils Marina, a picturesque fishing village, is just 5.7 km down the coast.
The promenade at the western end of the beach frames the full 1,500-metre sweep of golden sand in a single shot — best at sunrise before the beach fills.
The PortAventura resort skyline visible from the shoreline gives an unusual urban-meets-beach composition that stands out from typical Costa Dorada shots. The Passeig Jaume I de Salou, 1.2 km away, offers palm-lined walkway shots that work well in the golden hour.
Where to eat
Xiringuito Elektra is right on the beach — the closest option when you don't want to leave the sand. For something with a bit more atmosphere, The Roadhouse Salou has earned a 4.8/5 rating from nearly 7,000 reviews and sits 1.8 km away. Hotel Best Maritim, 1.1 km out, also offers dining and is a reliable fallback after a long beach day.
Where to stay
PortAventura World's own hotels — including PortAventura Hotel Gold River, rated 4.3/5 from over 11,000 reviews — put you 3.1 km from the beach with theme park access built in. Camping & Resort Sangulí Salou, rated 4.5/5 from over 9,500 reviews, is just 1.2 km away and suits families who want space and facilities without hotel prices. Estival Park Silmar, 4.3 km out and rated 4.2/5, is another solid option if the closer spots are full.
Photography
Shoot from the promenade at either end of the beach in the early morning — the golden sand catches the low light beautifully before the beach fills up. The PortAventura skyline visible from the eastern stretch gives the beach a distinctive backdrop that's hard to find anywhere else on the Costa Dorada.
Good to know
Arrive early in summer — this beach gets busy fast and the best spots on the golden sand go quickly. One source notes that despite quality certifications, Playa de Ponent is not listed as a Designated Bathing Water by the Environment Agency; check local water quality information before you swim, especially after heavy rain. The promenade is fully accessible, making it one of the more inclusive beaches on the Costa Dorada. Avoid visiting in December or January — winter storms make conditions unpleasant and potentially unsafe.
