Empuriabrava Beach
Golden sands, wetland skies, and easy Costa Brava living

About
Platja de Empuriabrava stretches for roughly 1,200 metres of golden sand along the Costa Brava in Catalonia, where the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park presses right up against the shoreline. The beach is genuinely wide — wide enough that even on a busy July afternoon you can find space to breathe — and the crystal-clear water catches the Mediterranean light in a way that makes the whole bay glow. A continuous promenade runs the full length of the beach, giving it a relaxed, walkable rhythm that families and couples both appreciate. The adjacent wetland reserve adds an unexpected dimension: herons and waders drift overhead while you're still towelling off. It's a rare combination of classic beach ease and genuine natural heritage.
How to get there
From Empuriabrava it's a 15-minute walk or a 5-minute drive to the beach daily. You can also arrive by boat from the Marina in about 10 minutes. Parking is available in street spaces and lots along the promenade — free in low season, and around €5 per day in high season when regulated zones are in effect. There's no entry fee for the beach itself.
Who it's for
For couples
The promenade is long enough for a proper evening walk without retracing your steps, and the wetland park next door offers a quiet, unhurried escape from the beach scene — a combination that rewards couples who want more than just sun and sand.
For families
Wide golden sand, easy flat access, Blue Flag water quality, and full promenade accessibility make this one of the more genuinely family-friendly beaches on the Costa Brava — there's room for children to run, and the natural park next door turns a beach day into a small adventure.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Platja de Empuriabrava earns its reputation as a family-friendly Blue Flag beach, but it's the Aiguamolls Natural Park next door that lifts it above the average Costa Brava offering. You're not just getting golden sand and crystal-clear water — you're getting a wetland reserve, birdwatching, and a promenade that actually goes somewhere. Be honest with yourself about August: it gets busy and the experience suffers for it. Come in June or September and the whole place feels like it belongs to you. The tramuntana wind and strong waves are real — respect them, check the forecast, and don't let the calm appearance on a still day lull you into complacency. Skip the peak month, arrive early, and walk the wetland edge at dusk. That's the version of this beach worth travelling for.
What to do
The Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park sits right at the beach's edge and offers birdwatching, hiking trails, and a close look at diverse wetland flora and fauna — it's genuinely worth a half-day. For something more dramatic, Skydive Empuriabrava is just 2.5km away and rated 4.7/5 by thousands of visitors. The medieval village of Castelló d'Empúries is the commune the beach belongs to, and it's worth a wander. Further afield, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes (4.7/5, 9km) sits high on a ridge with sweeping views over the Gulf of Roses.
The wide-open expanse of golden sand photographed from the promenade at low tide gives a clean, uncluttered composition that works especially well in early morning light.
The boundary where the Aiguamolls wetland meets the beach edge is visually striking — reeds, water, and open sky in one frame. The promenade itself, stretching into the distance with the Pyrenean foothills as a backdrop on clear days, makes for a strong wide-angle shot.
Where to eat
Right at the beach, Empuria Beach Cafe Lounge Restaurant Pizzeria Glacier covers everything from coffee to pizza. A short 0.4km walk brings you to both Txots Empuriabrava and Enjoy It — the latter rated 4.4/5 across over 7,000 reviews, which is a reliable signal. For a longer lunch worth the drive, Restaurant Las Palmeras (4.3/5, 3.2km) is a solid regional option.
Where to stay
Hotel Spa Mediterráneo Park (4.5/5, 3.2km) is the most comfortable base if you want a hotel with amenities close by. Camping Rodas (4.6/5, 3km) and Camping Mas Nou (4.4/5, 3.3km) are both well-reviewed and suit families or travellers who prefer to stay closer to the natural surroundings. For something a little further out with consistently high praise, Almadraba Park Hotel (4.6/5, 5.8km) is worth considering.
Photography
Shoot early morning when the golden sand is empty and the light skims low across the promenade — the wetland reeds in the background give the frame real depth. At dusk, position yourself at the northern end of the beach where the Aiguamolls park meets the shoreline for silhouettes of wading birds against a warm sky.
Good to know
The beach holds a Blue Flag rating, so facilities and water quality are monitored — a good sign for families. That said, the coast here can experience strong waves and wind, so check conditions before swimming, especially with children, and stay alert when the tramuntana picks up. Full accessibility is available via the promenade, making it one of the more inclusive beaches on the Costa Brava. August brings peak visitor numbers — if you want the golden sand to yourself, aim for June or early September instead.
