La Gola del Fluvià Beach
Where the Fluvià meets the sea, wild and free

About
La Gola del Fluvià sits where the Fluvià river spills into the Mediterranean, carving out one of the Costa Brava's most quietly spectacular settings. The beach stretches roughly 800 metres of golden sand, backed by the wetlands of Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park — a living landscape of reeds, birds, and brackish channels. The water runs turquoise and the swimming is safe, yet the place keeps a genuinely wild character that most Costa Brava beaches have long since traded away. It's quiet here, even in summer. That's the whole point.
How to get there
From Sant Pere Pescador, you can reach the beach by car in about 10 minutes along a dirt track, by bike in 15 minutes, or on foot in 30 minutes. Free designated parking is available within a five-minute walk of the beach, and caravan parking is on offer at Port Natura around the clock — note that some access roads carry a 2.1-metre height restriction, so check your vehicle before you head down. There's no entry fee to the beach itself.
Who it's for
For couples
The wild, unhurried atmosphere and the river-mouth scenery make this a genuinely romantic escape — long walks on 800 metres of golden sand with almost no one else around, and the natural park as your backdrop.
For families
Safe swimming, easy parking, and a flat sandy beach make La Gola del Fluvià a low-stress family day out. The natural park next door turns the visit into an impromptu nature lesson — kids can spot birds and explore the wetland edges without straying far.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
La Gola del Fluvià is the kind of place that reminds you what the Costa Brava looked like before the beach bars and the sunlounger rentals moved in. It's wild in the best sense — not rough or hard to reach, just genuinely untouched. The golden sand is real, the turquoise water is real, and the quiet is real. The natural park setting gives it a depth that a plain beach can't match: you're not just lying on sand, you're at the edge of one of Spain's most important wetland reserves. Easy access and free parking mean there's no friction getting here, which makes the payoff feel almost unfair. Go in June or September if you want the warmth without the peak-summer heat. Worth the detour from anywhere on the Gulf of Roses.
What to do
The beach sits inside Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, which offers birdwatching, nature trails, and a rare look at intact Empordà wetlands right on your doorstep. If you're after a bigger adrenaline hit, Skydive Empuriabrava is just 6.3 kilometres away — one of Europe's most respected skydiving centres. For a cultural detour, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, rated 4.7 out of 5, is a 14-kilometre drive and rewards the effort with sweeping views over the Gulf of Roses.
The river mouth itself is the hero shot — frame the point where the Fluvià meets the turquoise Mediterranean with the wetland reeds in the foreground at sunrise.
Further along the beach, the full 800-metre sweep of golden sand with the natural park tree line behind it works beautifully in the long late-afternoon light. The bird-rich wetland margins of Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, just steps from the sand, offer close-up wildlife frames that feel a world away from a typical beach photo.
Where to eat
Mas Gusó restaurant, just 3 kilometres away and rated 4.5 out of 5 by over four thousand reviewers, is the closest quality option and worth booking ahead. Enjoy It, 4.9 kilometres from the beach, holds a strong 4.4 out of 5 across more than seven thousand reviews — solid proof it's not just popular but consistently good. Pack a picnic for the beach itself; there are no on-site facilities.
Where to stay
Camping L'àmfora, rated 4.4 out of 5 and just 2.3 kilometres away, is the closest base and puts you in easy cycling distance of the beach each morning. Càmping Aquarius, 2.8 kilometres out and rated 4.5 out of 5, is another strong camping option with a loyal following. If you prefer a roof overhead, ibis Styles Figueres Ronda is 13.6 kilometres away and rated 4.5 out of 5 — a reliable fallback in nearby Figueres.
Photography
Shoot from the river-mouth end of the beach at golden hour for the contrast of turquoise water against the golden sand and the wetland reeds behind — the light in June and July is long and warm. Early morning is best for reflections on the calm river channel and for catching wading birds in the natural park before the day picks up.
Good to know
Come early if you want the golden sand to yourself — the beach stays quiet, but summer mornings are the sweetest window before the day heats up. Bring everything you need: food, water, sun protection. The natural park setting means the environment is protected, so leave nothing behind and respect the surrounding wetland habitat. Swimming is safe, but the river-mouth location means water conditions can shift, so keep an eye on young children near the water's edge.
