Thiers BeachFrance Beach Guide
Golden sands on Arcachon Bay, reached only by boat

About
Plage Thiers stretches roughly 400 metres along the edge of Arcachon, where golden sand meets the blue waters of the bay. It's a lively town-centre beach — easy to reach, easy to love, and reliably busy on summer afternoons. A lifeguard tower keeps watch over swimmers from early July through late August, making it one of the safer spots on this stretch of the Côte des Landes. The bay setting keeps the water calm, and the whole scene has that unhurried French seaside rhythm that makes you want to stay longer than planned.
How to get there
Plage Thiers is reached without a car — and that's the point. On foot, it's a 12-minute walk from Arcachon train station, daily. A local bus from Arcachon centre gets you there in about 5 minutes. From Cap Ferret, a ferry crosses the bay in 15 minutes and drops you practically at the water's edge. There is no road access to the beach side and no parking — leave the car behind entirely.
Who it's for
For couples
The ferry crossing from Cap Ferret at dusk, with blue bay water on both sides and the Arcachon skyline ahead, is quietly romantic without trying to be. Dinner at ALMA MÍA or COQUILLE afterwards rounds out the evening well.
For families
Supervised swimming from mid-June to late August, calm bay water, and a 12-minute walk from the train station make this one of the most practical family beaches on the Côte des Landes. Kids who've never arrived at a beach by ferry tend to remember it.
Our take
Plage Thiers is not a secret, and it doesn't pretend to be. It's a well-run, well-located town beach that does exactly what it promises: golden sand, blue bay water, lifeguard cover in summer, and a ferry ride that makes the whole trip feel like a small adventure. The boat-only access is a genuine plus — it keeps the atmosphere lighter than a beach you can drive to. It gets busy fast in July and August, so early arrival is the only real hack. For families, day-trippers from Bordeaux, or anyone who wants a safe, sociable swim without renting a car, this is one of the most sensible choices on the bay. Worth the ferry.
What to do
The elegant Quartier de la Ville d'Hiver, just 0.9 km away, is worth the short walk for its Belle Époque villas and shaded promenades. Climb to the Observatoire Sainte-Cécile (1 km) for a wide view over the bay, then loop through Parc Mauresque on the way back. Further afield, the Dune du Pilat — Europe's tallest sand dune — sits 12.8 km south and rewards the trip with panoramic views over Arcachon Bay and the Atlantic. The iconic stilt cabins of the Île aux Oiseaux and Cabanes Tchanquées are accessible by boat and make for a memorable half-day excursion.
Frame the lifeguard tower against the blue bay water at golden hour for a clean, graphic shot.
The ferry arriving from Cap Ferret with Arcachon's waterfront in the background gives you movement and depth in a single frame. From the beach looking south, the open bay and distant dune horizon make a wide, uncluttered landscape worth shooting in the early morning light.
Where to eat
Right at the beach, Café De La Plage – Restaurant Chez Pierre (0.1 km, 4.3/5 from over 7,000 reviews) is the obvious first stop for a post-swim plate. Diego – Arcachon is equally close at 0.1 km for something more casual. A short five-minute walk brings you to ALMA MÍA Arcachon (Italian, 4.9/5 from over 4,000 reviews) and COQUILLE (4.8/5), both at around 0.06 km — strong options if you're staying into the evening.
Where to stay
Camping Huttopia Arcachon (4.1/5, over 2,000 reviews) sits 1.6 km from the beach and suits travellers who want a relaxed, nature-adjacent base without straying far from town. For something more polished, Thalazur Arcachon (4.5/5, over 1,200 reviews) is 2.6 km away and brings a spa dimension to the stay — useful after a long day on the sand.
Photography
The best light hits the golden sand in the early morning before the beach fills up — position yourself near the lifeguard tower for a classic bay-and-blue-water composition. Late afternoon, when the ferry from Cap Ferret cuts across the frame with the Arcachon waterfront behind it, gives you the most layered and characterful shot of the day.
Good to know
Lifeguards are on duty from 12h to 19h between June 15 and August 29, with extended hours (10h–19h) from July 11 to August 16 — swim within those windows when possible. Swimming is supervised during summer months, but general vigilance is always recommended in the water even when a lifeguard is present. Arrive before midday in July and August if you want space on the golden sand — by early afternoon the beach is packed. The ferry from Cap Ferret is a practical and scenic way in; check daily schedules before you go.
