Thiers Beach
Golden sands, Belle Époque charm, Arcachon at its best

About
Plage Thiers stretches roughly 400 metres along the Arcachon waterfront in Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, its golden sand meeting calm blue water in one of France's most storied seaside towns. Behind the beach, a seafront promenade lined with shops gives the whole scene a lively, lived-in energy — this is a town beach in the truest sense. Belle Époque architecture frames the backdrop, those ornate 19th-century facades turning every glance inland into something worth photographing. Swimming is safe here, the water sheltered enough for families and casual dippers alike. It's busy by nature, but that energy is part of the appeal.
How to get there
Plage Thiers sits right in Arcachon's centre — effectively 0 km from the town itself. If you're driving, paid parking is available nearby, with covered car parks, street parking, and reserved accessible spots; no specific app or machine system is documented, so check local signage on arrival. On foot from Arcachon train station, it's a straightforward 13-minute walk. No entry fee applies to the beach itself.
Who it's for
For couples
The Belle Époque promenade makes for a genuinely elegant evening walk, with the blue water on one side and ornate 19th-century architecture on the other — a setting that doesn't need much embellishment.
For families
Safe swimming, easy access, reserved accessible parking, and shops right on the promenade make Plage Thiers one of the most practical family beaches on the Bassin d'Arcachon — you won't need to pack the entire house.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Plage Thiers is Arcachon's front room — a safe, golden-sand town beach that wears its Belle Époque heritage without trying too hard. Swimming is safe, access is easy, and the promenade infrastructure means it genuinely works for everyone from toddlers to travellers with mobility needs. It's not a secret, and it doesn't pretend to be — in July and August it fills up fast, so June or September are smarter calls. What sets it apart from a generic resort beach is the architecture at its back and the Bassin d'Arcachon at its front, a combination that gives even a short visit a sense of place. Use it as your base, then push out to the Dune du Pilat or the Île aux Oiseaux when you want something wilder.
What to do
A short stroll inland takes you to Le Quartier de la Ville d'Hiver, Arcachon's famous winter quarter of ornate villas, rated 4.6/5 and less than a kilometre away — easily the most rewarding walk from the beach. Climb to the Observatoire Sainte-Cécile, also 4.6/5 and just 1 km out, for elevated views over the bay. Further afield, the Dune du Pilat — Europe's tallest sand dune — sits 12.8 km away and is worth every minute of the drive. Cap Ferret Lighthouse offers 360° panoramic views of Arcachon Bay, and the Île aux Oiseaux, with its iconic stilt cabins, is one of the bay's most distinctive sights.
The Belle Époque building facades shot from the promenade with the golden sand and blue water in the foreground are the classic frame here.
The seafront promenade itself, looking along its length at golden hour, gives strong perspective lines. For something different, the view back toward town from the waterline at low tide captures the full sweep of the 400-metre beach.
Where to eat
Café De La Plage - Restaurant Chez Pierre is practically on the doorstep at 0.1 km, making it the obvious post-swim stop. Le Thiers is a 0.3 km walk along the promenade. For something with serious local buzz, ALMA MÍA Arcachon brings Italian cooking with a 4.9/5 rating from over 4,000 reviews, and COQUILLE — rated 4.8/5 — are both within 0.5 km.
Where to stay
Thalazur Arcachon, rated 4.5/5 across over 1,200 reviews, is the standout option at 2.6 km — a thalassotherapy resort that fits the beach holiday brief well. For campers, Camping Huttopia Arcachon at 1.6 km holds a solid 4.1/5 from more than 2,000 reviews and keeps you close to the action. If you're happy to venture further, Camping de la Dune 'Les Flots Bleus' and Camping Le Pyla are both around 10 km out near the Dune du Pilat.
Photography
The best shots come early morning, when the golden sand is uncluttered and the Belle Époque facades catch warm directional light from the east. At dusk, position yourself on the seafront promenade looking back toward the architecture for silhouette-friendly frames with the blue water in the foreground.
Good to know
July and August bring peak summer visitors — if you want space on the golden sand, aim for June or early September instead. The promenade is accessible and reserved accessible parking is on hand, making this one of the more inclusive beaches in the Bassin d'Arcachon. Swimming is safe, but always keep an eye on younger children near the water's edge. The seafront shops mean you can travel light — sunscreen, snacks and beach gear are all close at hand.
