Arcachon Beach
Golden sand, blue water, right in Arcachon's heart

About
Plage Arcachon sits at the very centre of town, a 300-metre sweep of golden sand lapped by blue Arcachon Bay water. The promenade runs right alongside it, so you're never far from a café, a bench, or a view. It's lively by nature — this is a beach that draws families, day-trippers, and locals alike from June through September. Sunbeds are available for hire, a lifeguard watches over swimmers in summer, and the water is safe for a dip. It's not a wild escape, but it's an honest, well-run town beach that delivers exactly what it promises.
How to get there
The beach is right in Arcachon's town centre — a 10-minute walk from the main hub or a 5-minute drive. Paid public parking is available nearby: Parking Centre Ville-Plage is just a 2-minute walk, and street parking runs along Boulevard de la Plage and adjacent streets. Note that an entry fee is required to access the beach. Accessible facilities are on-site, making it a practical choice for visitors with mobility needs.
Who it's for
For couples
An easy, low-effort beach day with a promenade stroll built in — ideal for couples who want sun, a good meal nearby, and a relaxed pace without hiring a car.
For families
The summer lifeguard, safe swimming, easy access, and paid sunbed concession make this one of the most practical family beaches on the Côte des Landes — no logistics headaches, just show up and enjoy.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Plage Arcachon is not trying to be a secret. It's a town beach, it knows it's a town beach, and it's very good at being one. The golden sand is well-maintained, the blue bay water is safe, the lifeguard is on duty in summer, and everything you need is within walking distance. It gets busy — genuinely packed in peak July and August — so manage your expectations if you're chasing solitude. But for a family afternoon, a lazy morning before lunch at Café De La Plage, or a base from which to explore the Dune du Pilat and the wider bay, it earns its place. Come in June or early September and it's close to perfect.
What to do
Just 0.9km away, Plage des Arbousiers offers a quieter alternative if you need a break from the main beach scene. A short walk inland takes you up to the Quartier de la Ville d'Hiver, a remarkable Belle Époque neighbourhood worth an hour of your time. For a panoramic reward, the Observatoire Sainte-Cécile at 1.8km gives you sweeping views over the bay. And if you can manage a half-day trip, the Dune du Pilat — Europe's tallest sand dune — is only 9.5km away and genuinely spectacular.
The promenade looking back toward the town makes a strong wide shot, especially with the golden sand and blue water in the foreground.
The sunbed rows at low season or early morning give a clean, graphic composition. For something more dramatic, the view from Observatoire Sainte-Cécile at 1.8km puts the whole bay — and the beach below — into perspective.
Where to eat
Club Plage Pereire (4.2/5, over 2,900 reviews) is the closest sit-down option at 0.8km, with Le Bikini just a little further at 0.9km for a more casual bite. For something with serious pedigree, Café De La Plage - Restaurant Chez Pierre has racked up over 7,000 reviews at 4.3/5 and is worth the 2.8km trip. If Italian is your mood, ALMA MÍA Arcachon holds an impressive 4.9/5 rating and sits 2.3km from the beach.
Where to stay
Thalazur Arcachon is the standout choice — rated 4.5/5 from over 1,200 reviews and just 0.3km from the sand, it's as close as you'll get. If you prefer a camping experience, Camping Huttopia Arcachon at 1.8km scores a solid 4.1/5 with a large base of reviewers. Further out toward the dunes, Camping de la Dune 'Les Flots Bleus' and Camping Le Pyla are options if you're planning to explore the wider Arcachon area.
Photography
The best light hits the golden sand in the early morning, when the blue bay water catches the soft Atlantic glow and the promenade is still quiet. Come back at golden hour for warm reflections along the waterfront and the town's architecture framing the shoreline.
Good to know
Arrive early in the morning if you want space on the golden sand — by midday in July and August the beach is packed. Paid sunbeds are available if you want to skip the towel-on-sand routine. The summer lifeguard is a genuine asset for families, but always swim within the supervised zone. Promenade access makes it easy to come and go, so it works well as a base for a full day in town.
