Moliets Beach
Wide golden sands, Atlantic surf, and pine-scented calm

About
Plage de Moliets stretches for roughly 3 kilometres along the Côte des Landes, backed by rolling dunes and the fragrant edge of a pine forest. The golden sand is wide and flat — the kind that lets you spread out without feeling hemmed in — and the blue Atlantic rolls in with enough energy to keep surfers happy. A championship golf course runs right to the dune edge, giving the backdrop an unexpectedly manicured contrast to the wild coast. Visitor numbers stay low compared to busier Landes resorts, so the atmosphere is genuinely relaxed. It's a beach that rewards those who simply want space, sea air, and a slower pace.
How to get there
From Moliets-et-Maâ village the beach is a five-minute drive, with easy public access maintained year-round. Parking is available on-site and operates on a paid seasonal tariff in summer; it's free off-season. A wooden boardwalk helps you cross the dunes, though soft sand beyond the boardwalk limits further access for those with mobility needs. The nearest major airport is Bordeaux–Mérignac (BOD), approximately 121 km away.
Who it's for
For couples
The wide, quiet beach and pine-backed dunes make for long, unhurried walks with almost no one else around — pair that with dinner at La Cave aux Moules and you have a low-key Landes evening worth repeating.
For families
The flat golden sand gives children plenty of room to run, and the supervised swimming season with clearly marked flags takes the guesswork out of where it's safe to paddle — just stay between them and watch for rip currents.
Our take
Atlantic rip currents are a real hazard at Plage de Moliets — swim between the flags during the supervised season and treat that rule as non-negotiable. With that understood, this is one of the more rewarding beaches on the Côte des Landes: 1.5 kilometres of golden sand, a genuine surf break, and visitor numbers that stay refreshingly low. The pine forest and golf course dunes give it a character you won't find on the more developed stretches further north. It's not a beach that tries to impress you — it just delivers space, clean blue water, and quiet. Come between June and September for open facilities and safe swimming. Skip November through February entirely. Worth the detour if you're driving the Landes coast.
What to do
The Golf de Moliets sits just 100 metres from the beach — a championship course threading through pine forest all the way to the dune edge, and worth a look even if you don't play. A short drive south brings you to the Courant d'Huchet mouth, a protected river estuary where tannin-dark water meets the Atlantic; the Bateliers du Courant d'Huchet run boat trips from Léon into this remarkable landscape. Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains, about 7.7 km away, offers a calmer tidal lake for swimming and a functioning village promenade if you want a change of scene.
The dune crest looking south along the full sweep of golden sand is the standout frame — shoot it at sunrise when the light is warm and the beach is empty.
The point where the golf course pines meet the dune edge gives an unusual layered shot: manicured green, wild sand, blue Atlantic all in one composition.
Where to eat
Right at the beach, Café la Plage, Maâ guinguette, and Le Grill de l'Océan are all within 200 metres — between them you'll cover everything from a cold drink to a proper grilled lunch. La Cave aux Moules, a seafood spot, and L'Endroit are both within 300 metres if you want to linger a little longer over dinner. Options are local and unfussy, which suits the beach's relaxed character well.
Where to stay
L'Océan is the closest option at just 200 metres from the sand, making it the obvious base if you want to roll out of bed and onto the beach. Le Chill sits 2.7 km away for a slightly more removed stay, while Le Relais de Port d'Albret and Lumaa Hôtel offer alternatives further afield at 7–8 km. Club Framissima Landes 3, at 8.4 km, suits those looking for a resort-style setup.
Photography
Shoot from the dune crest at golden hour for a sweeping view of golden sand meeting blue Atlantic water, with the pine forest framing the right edge of the frame. Early morning is best — the flat beach reflects the low light cleanly, and you'll have the shore largely to yourself before the day warms up.
Good to know
Atlantic rip currents are possible here — swim only between the flags during the supervised season, no exceptions. Dogs are generally welcome outside the supervised swimming zones, but check seasonal restrictions before you arrive. Avoid the beach between November and February: Atlantic storms roll in, the water turns cold, and facilities close entirely. The wooden boardwalk eases the dune crossing, but if you need firm-surface access beyond that point, conditions are limited.
