Petit Nice Beach
Golden sands, forest shade, and Arcachon Bay at your feet

About
Plage du Petit Nice stretches roughly 500 metres along the Bassin d'Arcachon in La Teste-de-Buch, Gironde — a family-friendly arc of golden sand where the grey waters of the bay lap in quietly and unhurried. Pine forest backs the beach almost to the waterline, casting cool shade and filling the air with resin on warm afternoons. The setting is calm rather than dramatic: moderate visitor numbers keep things relaxed without feeling deserted. Lifeguards patrol the shore each summer, and the water is considered safe for swimming, making it a reliable choice for families with young children.
How to get there
By car from Pyla-sur-Mer it's a five-minute drive — the easiest approach. UBA ferries also connect the bay, with crossings of 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on your departure point. Parking is free for cars in a large forest lot directly behind the beach; note a strict 2-metre height restriction applies from 1 June to 21 October, so vans and SUVs with roof boxes should measure up before they arrive. Campervans can stay overnight for €25 (charged between 1 AM and 6 AM), but overstaying that window draws a €50 fine.
Who it's for
For couples
A quiet walk along 500 metres of golden sand backed by pine forest, with the grey expanse of the Bassin d'Arcachon stretching ahead — it's understated and genuinely peaceful, especially on weekday mornings before the summer day-trippers arrive.
For families
Lifeguard supervision from 20 June to 6 September (11:00–19:00), safe swimming, easy beach access, and free parking make this one of the more stress-free family beaches on the Arcachon Bay — bring a picnic and let the kids loose on the golden sand.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Plage du Petit Nice won't dazzle you with turquoise water or white-sand drama — that's not what it's offering. What it does deliver is a calm, well-organised family beach on one of France's most distinctive coastal ecosystems, backed by pine forest and fronted by the wide grey waters of the Bassin d'Arcachon. The free parking, lifeguard cover in summer, and easy access from Pyla-sur-Mer make it a practical and genuinely pleasant base. The Dune du Pilat nearby elevates any visit from a beach day into something more memorable. Come in June or early September to avoid the peak summer press and you'll find the golden sand largely to yourself. It's not a destination beach in isolation — but as part of an Arcachon Bay itinerary, it earns its place.
What to do
The Dune du Pilat, Europe's tallest sand dune, sits just 4.6 km away and is the unmissable excursion from this stretch of coast — the climb is short but the view across the bay and the Atlantic forest is worth every step. Just 1 km offshore, the Banc d'Arguin sandbank nature reserve is reachable by boat and rewards birdwatchers and nature lovers with a rare, protected landscape. For a wider panorama of the region, the Observatoire Sainte-Cécile is about 12 km away and rated highly by visitors.
Frame the golden sand against the pine forest edge at the back of the beach for a shot that feels distinctly Landes — the contrast of green canopy and warm sand works best in soft morning light.
The grey, glassy bay at low tide offers a minimalist reflection shot looking out toward the Banc d'Arguin sandbank. For scale and drama, the short drive to the Dune du Pilat rewards with sweeping views over the forest and bay that are genuinely hard to replicate.
Where to eat
The closest dining option is Camping Panorama du Pyla Yelloh! Village, just 2.2 km away and a practical stop after a beach afternoon. For something more considered, Hôtel Restaurant La Co(o)rniche (5.2 km) and Ha(a)ïtza (5.8 km) are both well-regarded restaurants in the Pyla-sur-Mer area, consistently praised by diners. If you're self-catering or camping, packing a picnic is a smart move — there are no on-beach food stalls mentioned.
Where to stay
The closest overnight options cluster around Pyla-sur-Mer: Camping Panorama du Pyla Yelloh! Village is 2.2 km away and suits families and campervan travellers, while Camping de la Dune 'Les Flots Bleus' is 3.3 km out for a more budget-oriented stay. For hotel comfort, Hôtel Restaurant La Co(o)rniche and Ha(a)ïtza both sit within 6 km and offer a more polished base for exploring the Bassin d'Arcachon.
Photography
Early morning light catches the golden sand at its warmest before visitors arrive, with the pine forest providing a natural frame for wide shots looking back from the waterline. The grey, mirror-like surface of the bay at low tide reflects the sky beautifully — shoot facing west in the late afternoon for the most atmospheric results.
Good to know
The 2-metre height restriction on the forest car park runs from 1 June to 21 October — if your vehicle exceeds that, plan an alternative or arrive outside those dates. Campervan overnighters: the €25 fee covers 1–6 AM only; staying beyond 6 AM risks a €50 fine, so set an alarm. Lifeguard supervision runs from 20 June to 6 September between 11:00 and 19:00 — swim within the flagged zone and within those hours for the safest experience. Arriving before mid-morning on summer weekends keeps you ahead of the day-trippers from Arcachon.
