L'Étang-Salé BeachRéunion Beach Guide
Wild black sand, raw power, no swimming allowed

About
Plage de l'Étang-Salé-les-Bains is a striking volcanic beach on the southwest coast of La Réunion, in the Indian Ocean's Mascarene Islands. The black sand stretches under a canopy of casuarina trees, their needles whispering in the trade winds while deep blue ocean swells roll in with force. The contrast between the dark volcanic sand and the open blue water is stark and genuinely dramatic — this is a wild beach, not a resort one. It belongs to the commune of L'Étang-Salé les Bains, a quiet village that keeps the pace slow and the atmosphere unhurried.
How to get there
From L'Étang-Salé, you can drive directly to the beachfront, where several free parking areas are available near the shore. A bus also runs from L'Étang-Salé town center, reaching the beach in around 10 minutes with roughly hourly service — a practical option if you'd rather skip the car. Saint-Pierre Pierrefonds Airport is approximately 11.3 km away, making this an easy first or last stop on a Réunion itinerary.
Who it's for
For couples
For couples who prefer drama over deck chairs, the black volcanic sand backed by casuarina trees and open blue ocean creates a genuinely striking setting for a long walk — just keep your shoes on and stay well clear of the water.
For families
Families should visit for the scenery and the shade of the casuarina trees, but keep children away from the water at all times — strong currents, shore-break waves, and shark risk make this beach unsafe for swimming of any kind, including paddling at the edge.
Our take
Let's be direct: you do not come to Plage de l'Étang-Salé-les-Bains to swim. Strong currents, powerful shore-break, and shark risk mean the water is off-limits, and that rule exists for good reason. What you do come for is the raw, volcanic beauty of a beach that hasn't been softened for tourism — black sand, blue ocean, casuarina shade, and a wild energy that most beach guides won't hand you. Surfers know this stretch well. Photographers do too. If you're expecting a lagoon, look elsewhere on the island. If you want La Réunion unfiltered, this is it.
What to do
The beach itself is the draw for surfers, who come for the raw wave energy — but spectating from the shore is equally compelling. Nearby, Le Gouffre is a natural coastal feature worth the short trip at 2.2 km away. The Vortex énergétique and Le jardin des cairns, both within 3 km, offer a more contemplative detour for those curious about the island's spiritual and natural landscape.
The tideline where black volcanic sand meets deep blue ocean is the defining shot — shoot wide and low at golden hour for maximum contrast.
The casuarina tree corridor running parallel to the beach gives a moody, filtered-light frame that works especially well in the soft morning hours.
Where to eat
La Marmite Étang-Salé is the closest option, just 0.4 km from the beach — a convenient stop before or after your visit. Le Macao sits 0.7 km away, and Pates et Pizzas is a short walk further at 1 km. For something with more local character, Moustache et Béret serves French and local cuisine about 3 km out.
Where to stay
Résidence Les Sables Noirs is the closest place to stay, 3.5 km from the beach — the name is fitting given the volcanic setting. For a more upscale option, Blue Margouillat is 9.7 km away.
Photography
The best shots come at low sun angles — early morning or late afternoon — when the black sand takes on a deep, almost metallic sheen against the blue ocean. The casuarina tree line makes a strong natural frame; position yourself beneath the pines looking seaward for a composition that captures the beach's wild, untamed character.
Good to know
Do NOT enter the water here. Strong currents and powerful shore-break waves make swimming genuinely dangerous, and shark risk means swimming is often prohibited in unprotected areas — this is not a precaution, it is a hard rule. The black volcanic sand absorbs heat intensely under the tropical sun, so wear footwear on the beach or risk burns. If you venture toward the Bassin Pirogue area, watch for sea urchins underfoot.
