Brisants Beach
White sand, turquoise water, and a lively marina vibe

About
Plage des Brisants stretches roughly 350 metres along the coast of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, one of Réunion's most popular seaside towns on the Indian Ocean. The white sand is clean and well-kept, and the turquoise water catches the light in a way that makes the whole beach feel sun-drenched even on a mild day. It sits right beside the marina, so the backdrop is a mix of bobbing boats, waterfront bars, and the easy rhythm of a beach town that knows how to enjoy itself. Access is easy, the atmosphere is lively, and the beach draws a steady stream of families, day-trippers, and locals alike.
How to get there
From Saint-Gilles-les-Bains the beach is a five-minute drive — it's essentially in the heart of town, so you'll barely need directions. If you're staying near the marina area, a ten-minute walk gets you there. Parking is available nearby in a mix of options, though expect it to fill up fast on weekends and during local events. There's no entry fee.
Who it's for
For couples
The marina-side setting makes for easy, unhurried evenings — a walk along the port at dusk followed by dinner at SAUVAGE just 0.2 km away is a simple but genuinely good date. The lively waterfront energy keeps things interesting without requiring any planning.
For families
The easy access, nearby parking, and flat white-sand beach make logistics simple with kids in tow. The Aquarium de la Réunion at 1.5 km is a natural add-on for a full family day out.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Plage des Brisants is not a remote escape — and it doesn't pretend to be. It's an urban beach that does its job well: white sand, turquoise water, easy access, and a lively marina right on its doorstep. Swimming conditions are moderate, so don't treat the calm colour of the water as a guarantee of calm seas, and stay well clear during cyclone season from January to March. What the beach does offer is convenience and atmosphere in equal measure — good food within walking distance, boat tours half a kilometre away, and an aquarium that gives real context to the reef ecosystem just offshore. Come in the dry season between May and October, arrive before the day-trippers, and you'll find it genuinely enjoyable.
What to do
The Port de Saint-Gilles is just 0.5 km away and worth an hour of your time — you can book boat tours, try deep-sea fishing, or simply wander the dockside shops and bars. A short 1.5 km walk or drive brings you to the Aquarium de la Réunion, which showcases the marine life living in the lagoon and coral reefs just offshore — a genuinely good stop if you want to understand what's beneath the surface. For something greener, the Jardin d'Eden botanical garden is 2.5 km away and holds around 700 tropical plant species.
Frame the turquoise water against the white sand at low sun for a clean, colour-saturated shot with no distractions.
The Port de Saint-Gilles at 0.5 km gives you boats, masts, and waterfront architecture for a more textured composition. Early morning from the marina-facing end of the beach captures both the water and the port in one wide frame before the beach fills up.
Where to eat
SAUVAGE, just 0.2 km from the beach, is the closest option and carries an impressive 4.6-star rating across over 5,000 reviews — hard to argue with those numbers. Le D.C.P is another strong choice at 0.7 km, also rated 4.6 stars and well-reviewed by nearly 3,000 people. If you're willing to travel a little further, Restaurant Le Manta at 2.9 km offers a solid 4.5-star experience with a more relaxed pace.
Where to stay
Hotel le Recif is the closest option at just 1 km from the beach, rated 4.2 stars — convenient if you want to roll out of bed and onto the sand. LUX Saint Gilles at 3.6 km and Boucan Canot at 3.4 km both sit at 4.3 stars and offer a more resort-style stay within easy reach of the beach.
Photography
The best light hits the white sand and turquoise water in the early morning, when the marina boats are still quiet and the beach hasn't filled up yet — shoot facing the water with the port in the background for a layered composition. Golden hour from the waterfront side, with the marina lights beginning to glow, gives you a completely different and equally strong shot.
Good to know
Swimming is rated moderate here, so check local conditions before getting in — the sea can be rougher than the calm turquoise colour suggests. Avoid visiting in January, February, or March: this is cyclone season, and higher rainfall and rougher seas make the beach far less enjoyable and potentially unsafe. Arrive early on weekends if you want a good spot on the sand — this beach gets busy and space fills up quickly. The waterfront strip right behind the beach has everything you need, so there's no reason to haul a heavy bag from far away.
