About

Perched directly beneath the iconic Eluanbi Lighthouse at the southernmost tip of Taiwan, this rocky coral reef platform is unlike any conventional beach. There is no sand here — just flat reef stretching toward crystal-clear water channels that shimmer in the tropical sun. The Pacific presses hard against the open coast, and the sense of standing at the very edge of the island is palpable. Almost always empty, it feels genuinely remote despite sitting inside Eluanbi Park. The wild vibe is real: this is raw coastline, not a groomed resort shore.

How to get there

Enter through the Eluanbi Park main entrance and pay the NT$60 park admission fee, which also covers parking. From the entrance, a roughly 10-minute hike brings you down to the reef platform — the descent trail and reef terrain are not wheelchair accessible. The park is open daily, and paid parking is available at the entrance lot, included in the price of park entry.

Who it's for

For couples

The almost always empty reef and the drama of standing at Taiwan's southernmost point make this a quietly memorable stop for couples who prefer wild coastline over resort beaches — bring a picnic and let the lighthouse do the work.

For families

The rocky reef terrain, slippery surfaces at low tide, no lifeguard, and strong Pacific currents make this a poor choice for young children or families expecting a safe paddling environment — the nearby Eluanbi Park paths are a better family option.

Our take

Be clear-eyed before you come: this is not a swimming beach. Strong currents on the open Pacific side are a genuine hazard, the reef is slippery at low tide, and there is no lifeguard. That said, for snorkelers who respect the conditions and check tide tables, the crystal-clear water channels over the coral platform are exceptional. The fact that it sits directly beneath the Eluanbi Lighthouse — at the literal southernmost point of Taiwan — gives it a geographic weight that most beaches simply cannot offer. It's almost always empty, which is remarkable given how close it sits to the Kenting tourist corridor. Come in the dry season between November and April, avoid the northeast monsoon months of December through February, pay your NT$60 park entry, and leave the coral exactly where you find it.— The wmb team

What to do

The Eluanbi Lighthouse sits just 0.1 km away and is the cultural centrepiece of the area — a historic structure worth a close look before or after your reef visit. Eluanbi Park itself, only 0.2 km from the reef, is worth exploring in its own right. A short distance away, the official Southernmost Point of Taiwan marker at 0.7 km makes for a satisfying landmark stop. Further afield, the Shading Beach Ecological Reserve at 3 km protects a rare biogenic shell-fragment sand beach, and the elevated coral limestone cliffs of Longpan Coastal Grassland at 5 km offer dramatic Pacific views.

Instagram spots

Frame the Eluanbi Lighthouse from the reef platform below for a shot that captures both the wild coral foreground and the iconic white tower above.

The clear water channels threading through the flat reef catch the light beautifully — shoot low and wide during morning hours before any haze builds. The southernmost-point setting adds a geographic storytelling angle that no other spot in Taiwan can match.

Where to eat

For a proper sit-down meal, Mambo Thai Restaurant is the closest option at about 6.9 km from the reef. Kenting Restaurant is another choice at 7.5 km, and Nossa at 7.6 km. There is nothing to eat or drink at the reef itself, so bring water and snacks for your visit.

Where to stay

Fullon Resort is the nearest hotel option, around 5.3 km from the park entrance, close to the southern tip. Howard Beach Resort Kenting is another solid choice at 6.4 km, well-positioned for exploring the wider Kenting area.

Photography

The most compelling shot is from the flat reef platform looking straight up at the Eluanbi Lighthouse — the contrast of white tower against open sky is striking, especially in the soft light of early morning. The clear water channels cutting through the coral make for strong foreground interest; shoot during the dry season months of November through April for calmer water and better light clarity.

Good to know

Check tide tables before you descend — the reef is slippery at low tide and there is no lifeguard on site. Strong currents run along the open Pacific side of this coast, so do not enter the water without carefully assessing conditions first. Avoid visiting in December, January, and February, when the northeast monsoon drives rough conditions and strong currents on the Pacific side. Local rules are strictly enforced: do not collect coral, do not climb on the reef, and make sure you have paid the park entry fee before heading down.

Frequently asked

Swimming here carries real risk. Strong currents run along the open Pacific side of the reef, there is no lifeguard on site, and the reef is slippery at low tide. Always check tide tables before descending, assess current conditions carefully, and do not enter the water if conditions look rough.
Enter through the Eluanbi Park main entrance — paid parking is available there and is included in the NT$60 park admission fee. From the entrance, it's roughly a 10-minute hike down to the reef. Note that the descent trail and reef terrain are not wheelchair accessible.
The dry season from November through April generally offers calmer, clearer conditions. Avoid December, January, and February specifically — the northeast monsoon creates strong currents and rough conditions on the Pacific side during those months. Outside those months, the shoulder periods within the dry season offer particularly reliable conditions.
No. Pets are not permitted inside Eluanbi Park, which you must pass through to reach the reef. Leave your dog at your accommodation before visiting.
There is nothing to eat or drink at the reef itself. The nearest restaurant is Mambo Thai Restaurant at about 6.9 km away. Bring your own water and snacks — it's a short hike but the tropical heat is real.
Three rules matter here: do not collect coral, do not climb on the reef, and pay the NT$60 Eluanbi Park entry fee before heading down. These are enforced within the park. Respecting the reef also means not disturbing the marine ecosystem in the water channels.
Yes — it's one of the better snorkelling spots in the area. The flat coral reef platform sits beneath crystal-clear water channels with good visibility. Snorkel during the dry season for the calmest conditions, always check the tide tables first, and stay well clear of the open Pacific side where currents are strong.
