About

(Nánwān) stretches roughly 637 metres along the coast, a wide arc of white sand meeting blue water in a prime stretch of the Kenting area. Warm currents keep the sea inviting, and a warm-water inlet from the nearby nuclear plant keeps sea temperatures unusually consistent. A row of seafood stalls lines the beachfront, surf rental shops are never far away, and the lively atmosphere draws domestic tourists in droves. Be aware that jellyfish blooms arrive May through June, so check conditions before you wade in.

How to get there

sits within Hengchun township in southern Taiwan, about 15 minutes by car from Hengchun town. If you're coming from Kaohsiung, the bus from Zuoying (Kaohsiung HSR station) takes around 140 minutes and runs daily — a practical option if you'd rather skip the drive. Paid parking is available in multiple lots along the beachfront, priced at NT$40–50 per hour for a car.

Who it's for

For couples

A sunset walk along the paved beachfront road, followed by fresh seafood from the stall row, makes for an easy, unhurried evening — come on a weekday outside peak season to keep the atmosphere relaxed rather than hectic.

For families

Year-round swimming and easy flat-sand access make genuinely family-friendly, and some rental operators have accessible equipment; just keep children firmly within the flagged swimming zones and well away from the jet-ski and banana boat areas.

Our take

Rip currents opposite the police station are a real hazard — swim only within flagged zones, no exceptions. That said, delivers a genuinely energetic beach day: white sand, blue water, year-round swimming, surf rentals, and a seafood stall row that smells exactly as good as it looks. The warm-water inlet keeps conditions swimmable even in cooler months, which is a legitimate draw for a Taiwan beach. Skip July and August — the beach becomes uncomfortably packed and jellyfish blooms peak. Come between November and April for dry weather, manageable visitor numbers, and the best chance of clean water. It's not a quiet escape, but it's not trying to be — is Taiwan's south coast at full volume, and on the right day that's exactly what you want.— The wmb team

What to do

Kenting National Park begins just 2.1 km from the beach and is the obvious first excursion — the Visitor Center, about 5 km away, has solid exhibits on local ecology and is a good orientation stop. Houbihu, 2.5 km along the coast, is worth a look for a change of pace from the main beach scene. History lovers can make the short trip to Hengchun Old Town Walls, roughly 8 km away, or push out to Eluanbi Lighthouse at 12 km to take in the views from Taiwan's southernmost point.

Instagram spots

The long white-sand shoreline shot from the paved beachfront road captures the full curve of the bay with blue water as a backdrop — best in early morning light before the beach fills.

The colourful seafood stall row makes a vivid street-style frame, and the surf rental boards lined up at the water's edge add texture and local character to any shot.

Where to eat

The seafood stall row right on the beachfront is the obvious first stop — fresh, casual, and very much part of the experience. For something different, Steamed Buns is about 4.8 km away, while Beef Noodle and Milano Pizzeria Kenting are both around 5.2 km if you want to venture a little further.

Where to stay

Amanda Hotel Kenting is the closest option at just 0.9 km from the beach, making it easy to be first on the sand in the morning. Chateau Beach Resort at 3.1 km and Hotel dùa Kenting at 4.2 km offer alternatives if Amanda is full, both within easy reach of the beachfront.

Photography

Shoot early morning when the white sand is uncluttered and the blue water catches the low light cleanest — the surf rental infrastructure and seafood stall row make for vivid foreground detail later in the day. The beachfront paved road gives a long, unobstructed sightline down the full 637-metre sweep, ideal for a wide-angle composition at golden hour.

Good to know

Rip currents are possible directly opposite the local police station — stay well clear of that stretch and never swim outside the flagged zones. Jet-ski and banana boat activity zones are clearly demarcated, so keep an eye on those boundaries if you're in the water. Open fires are not permitted on the beach. July and August bring extreme overcrowding and heightened jellyfish risk, plus typhoon exposure from June through September — plan your visit outside that window if you can.
