Le Touquet Beach
Golden sands, a lighthouse, and a water park on the Channel

About
Le Touquet's beach stretches for some 2,500 metres along the Canche Bay, its golden sand wide and firm underfoot at low tide, the blue water of the Channel rolling in under big northern skies. This is a proper resort beach — lively, well-organised, and unapologetically popular with French and British visitors alike. The Aqualud water park sits right on the sand, the 57-metre Phare de la Canche punctuates the horizon, and the Canche Bay Nature Park begins where the dunes thin out. It's the kind of place where you can rent a beach buggy in the morning, swim in supervised waters in the afternoon, and eat well in the evening.
How to get there
From Le Touquet town centre it's a five-minute drive to the beach; the Étaples-Le Touquet train station connects by daily shuttle for those arriving by rail. Parking is available in a tiered zone system: Red Zone costs €2/hour (first 7 hours, then €16 for the 8th hour); Green Zone costs €1/hour (first 7 hours, then €18 for the 8th hour). There's a free window daily from 12:30–14:30 in paid zones, free parking on market days (Thursday and Saturday, 9:00–14:30) at the Aqualud and Nautical Centre car parks, and White Zones near the Equestrian Park, Sanguet Avenue, and the Airport are always free. From July 2025, parking enforcement uses LAPI — Automated Licence Plate Recognition — so don't rely on slipping away unnoticed.
Who it's for
For couples
An evening walk along 2,500 metres of golden sand followed by dinner at one of the estuary-side restaurants makes for an easy, unhurried date. The lighthouse climb at dusk, with views over the Channel, is a genuinely good reason to linger.
For families
Aqualud Water Park adjacent to the beach is the headline act for families, and supervised swimming from 28 June to 31 August (11h–19h) means younger swimmers have a safe, flagged zone. Beach ramps and Aqualud's wheelchair facilities mean the whole family can access the site comfortably.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Le Touquet is the Opal Coast at its most polished — a proper resort town that doesn't pretend to be a secret. The golden sand is wide, the swimming is supervised and safe in season, and there's enough to fill two or three days without repeating yourself. It's busy in July and August, and that's just the deal. Come in June or early September and you'll get the same beach with room to breathe. The lighthouse, the nature park, and the estuary walks give it more depth than a pure beach-and-bar destination. If you want wild and undiscovered, look elsewhere on the Hauts-de-France coast. If you want a well-run, family-friendly resort with good food and a genuine sense of place, Le Touquet delivers.
What to do
Aqualud Water Park, right on the beach at 0.5km, is the obvious draw for a beach day with indoor and outdoor pools — worth a half-day easily. When you're done with the water, walk or cycle the Balade de la Canche (2km away, rated 4.8/5) along the estuary for birdwatching and pine-forest paths through the dunes. The Canche Bay Nature Park, just 1km from the beach, is a protected estuary worth exploring on foot. And if your legs are up to it, the 274-step climb inside the 57-metre Le Touquet Lighthouse rewards you with panoramic views over the town and the English Channel.
The Phare de la Canche lighthouse framed against the Channel sky is the most recognisable shot on this stretch of coast — go at dusk for warm light on the white tower.
The wide golden sand at low tide, with Aqualud's colourful slides visible in the background, gives you a classic northern French beach frame. The dune and pine-forest edge of the Canche Bay Nature Park offers a quieter, more textured shot away from the resort bustle.
Where to eat
La Plage des Pirates (0.2km) is the closest option to the sand, while O'Safran (0.5km) doubles as a bar and restaurant — useful for a long lunch. For something more substantial, Restaurant l'Enduro Plage and Perard Traditions are both within 0.5km and well-regarded locally. Restaurant La Base Nord, about 2km out and rated 4.4/5 across over 3,000 reviews, is worth the short drive if you want a proper sit-down meal.
Where to stay
Hôtel Barrière Le Westminster (0.9km, 4.7/5 from 1,055 reviews) is the grande dame of Le Touquet — old-school resort luxury with a strong reputation. The Novotel Thalassa Le Touquet (0.9km, 4.1/5) is a reliable thalassotherapy option if you want spa access alongside your beach stay. Le Grand Hôtel Le Touquet (1.4km, 4.2/5) offers a solid mid-range alternative with nearly 2,000 reviews to back it up.
Photography
The 57-metre lighthouse makes a strong vertical subject at golden hour, especially from the dune line with the Channel behind it. Early morning on the beach — before the day-trippers arrive — gives you the widest, emptiest stretch of golden sand with soft northern light and blue water in the background.
Good to know
Supervised swimming runs daily from 28 June to 31 August between 11h and 19h, and on weekends and public holidays outside that period from 12h to 18h at the central post — always check local signage for the exact delimited zones before entering the water. Outside supervised hours, swim with caution and keep an eye on children near the waterline. The beach is accessible via ramps, and Aqualud has wheelchair facilities, making it one of the more inclusive stretches on the Opal Coast. Avoid visiting in November, December, or January — water temperatures drop sharply and the water park operates on a reduced schedule.
